Nazif is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Other members are Senators Shehu Sani, Biodun Olujimi, Hope Uzodinma, Dino Melaye and Peter Nwaoboshi.

The committee is expected to meet with the House of Representatives to harmonise the versions of the amended bill before the document is sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The Senate had in 2017, passed an amended version of the 2010 Electoral Act.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, amended the Act to change the order of the 2019 general elections time table.

This came barely a month after INEC released the time-table for the general elections.

With the amendment, the National Assembly election is to hold first, followed by gubernatorial and state assembly polls and presidential election to be conducted last.

PoliticsReps Move Against Medical Tourism by 1clickng(op): 9:17am On Jan 25, 2018
The House of Representatives has commenced process on a law that would discourage medical tourism embarked by some public office holders.

The Bill sponsored by Rep. Sergius Ogun (Edo-PDP) seeks to prohibit international trips for medical treatment by public officers without approval and strengthen health institutions for efficient service delivery.

Ogun said on Wednesday that the bill comprising of 13 clauses was necessitated by the need to address the abuse of opportunities by public officers who seek medical treatment abroad.

“These abuses are many, on the pretext of fabricated medical conditions, many public officials simply disappear from Nigeria and abdicate their duties for lengthy periods while their emoluments are paid for the period.

“Nigeria is also paying the bills for their medical tours.

“Even those who have not fabricated their conditions abandon their official duties on account of ailments that can be treated in Nigeria.

“It is said that hundreds of Nigerians daily embark on medical tours to countries in Europe, America and Asia; a great number of these Nigerians are public officials,’’ Ogun said.

He said that “Pharmanews’ quoted the 2014 Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) annual report as stating that the Indian High Commission confirmed that Indian hospitals received 18,000 Nigerians on medical visa in 2012.

“And these Nigerians spent about $260million on those trips in one year

“This gives us a picture of what Nigeria as a nation has sunk overall into medical tours by public officials and their kit and kin.

“There is urgent need to curtail this anomaly,’’ the lawmaker added.

The bill is expected to come up for second reading and debate on its general principles.

PoliticsAnambra State: FG To Immortalise Ekwueme by 1clickng(op): 4:20pm On Jan 24, 2018
The Anambra House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government to immortalise Nigeria’s first Vice President, late Dr Alex Ekwueme as a reward for his service to the country.

The assembly made the call on Wednesday in Awka at the House plenary session.

The lawmakers noted that the late Ekwueme, who died on Nov. 19, 2017 at the age of 85, had worked for the unity of the country and deserved lasting honours.

The call was based on a motion on notice moved by the member representing Orumba North State constituency, Chief Romanus Obi.

Obi said that the fallen icon deserved great respect at death considering his selfless service and great contributions towards the development and unity of the Nigerian nation.

“Ekwueme was a unifying factor in the political movement of this country and never hid his wealth of knowledge or used it selflessly.

“The former vice president embraced all tribes and preached unity of the Nigerian nation,” he said.

PoliticsAPGA To Adopt Buhari As 2019 Presidential Candidate by 1clickng(op): 8:25am On Jan 23, 2018
There were indications that the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) may adopt President Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections.

The party’s National Chairman, Victor Oye, gave this hint at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

According to Oye, at the appropriate time, the statutory organs of the party would take a position on the party’s standard bearer for the presidential election.

He, however, expressed confidence that his party would regain lost grounds in South-East states.

He said APC would lose Imo State to APGA.

“Governor Rochas Okorocha has remained confused immediately he left APGA for APC. The god of APGA has deserted him and that’s why he has derailed. We are ready to take over Imo State from him,” he said.

On Buhari’s administration, Oye said the President deserved the cooperation of all who meant well for the country and should not be distracted.

“We call on President Buhari to remain focused; he owes Nigerians the right to govern well, with the fear of God. He has started well and we pray to God to give him the strength to continue the good work he has started.

Breaking News: Anambra State: Goody Ezeemo Arrested His Deputy For Decamping to APGA.

Goody Ezeemo destroys PPA.
...arrests his deputy for decamping to APGA.

AIF Media

As I write, the deputy governorship candidate of PPA and running mate to Chief Goody Ezeemo in the November 18, governorship election, Hon Nkwoka Stanley Atinga is with the state CID Awka.

The State CID is acting on a petition by chief Ezeemo who was the candidate of the PPA in the last governorship election, AIF Media learned.

According to a source, Ezeemo is demanding for the return of the campaign Siena bus that was giving to his running mate during the election.

The source told AIF Media that PPA realised about 200 million naira during the party's governorship campaign. The fund which was under the custody of the guber candidate has not been accounted for.

Hon Nkwoka is not the only member of PPA going through this harassment from their party guber candidate.

Many of the party chairmen were also arrested and forced to return the 1,000 naira given to them to lobby for votes at the day of the election.

This has caused many crisis in PPA and in the stakeholders meeting held at an undisclosed location at Awka, the leaders and all the LGA chairmen in PPA passed a resolution to expel Chief Ezeemo from the party.

Hon Nkwoka Atinga is a member of AIF Media. He decamped to APGA earlier this year, accusing Ezeemo to have ran their campaign like a personal business despite their individual contributions.

He is still at the State CID Awka, Anambra State and we appeal to the authorities to be fair and just in dealing with the matter.

AIF Media will keep monitoring the situation.

According to his facebook handle, he is back:

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has ordered Shoprite Checkers Limited, operator of Shoprite outlets in Nigeria, to pay A.I.C. Limited $10m for breach of contract.

Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) on Wednesday threatened to boycott bad roads should the Federal Government fail to repairs important roads before the rains begin.

The PTD National Chairman, Comrade Salimon Oladiti made the threat in Abuja in a statement signed by Mr Abdulkadir Garba, Head Media Relations of the union.

According to him, the warning may affect the smooth supply and distribution of petroleum products to some parts of the country.

”Despite the visit by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the road leading to the Tatabu Bridge is still in a deplorable state stretching from Jebba to Mokwa, where trucks spend days on the road.

”We therefore call on the Federal Government to expedite action on repairing the road, because with the onset of the rain soon, the situation will totally be out of control.

”Some of the bad roads identified must be repaired as Tanker Drivers cannot do anything to assuage the suffering of Nigerians under the circumstance.

The Nigerian government has called for the support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in providing lasting solutions to the farmers and herdsmen crisis in the country.

The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau disclosed this after a meeting with the President of the ECOWAS commission, Marcel De Souza at the ECOWAS secretariat Abuja.

This is one of the efforts being employed by federal government in tackling herdsmen crisis and to ensure that justice was meted out on the perpetrators.

Dambazau after the meeting told newsmen that the discussion was bordered on regional security as herder/farmers clashes alongside terrorists attacks became worrisome

He called for a ministerial conference of ECOWAS member states in order to come up with a framework that will address the trans-border crimes, which he said had contributed to the conflict.
