Goodluck Ebele Azikwe Jonathan (GCFR, BNER, GCON). He is an Ijaw from Bayelsa State.


Jonathan is the 14th president of Nigeria. He is a politician and has been the president of Nigeria since 2010.


Goodluck Jonathan was born to the family of Canoe makers on November 20, 1957 at Ogbia, Bayelsa State.


Goodluck Jonathan attended the University of Port Harcourt from 1987-1995, where he obtained a Second Class Honors in Zoology, he later obtained an M.sc degree in Hydrobiology and Fisheries biology, and a Ph.D in Zoology from University of Port Harcourt.


Before joining politics in 1998, Goodluck Jonathan worked as an education inspector, lecturer and environmental-protection officer.


After joining the Bayelsa State politics in 1998, Goodluck Jonathan became a deputy governor to the Bayelsa State Governor, Alamieseigha on 29 May 1999. He later became the governor of the State on December 9 2005 after Diepreye Alamieseigha was impeached by the Bayelsa Assembly after being charged with money laundering in the United Kingdom.


He later became the Vice president of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 and president of Nigeria after his boss the then president, Alhaji Umar Yar’adua died after a failed health. Jonathan was sworn in as president on 6 May 2010, becoming Nigeria’s 14th Head of State.


He contested the position of president under the PDP and was announced winner of the party’s primary election on 13 January 2011 at the Eagle Square in Abuja.


Jonathan later won the general election against Gen Muhammadu Buhari and Nuhu Ribadu with 57% of votes, and on 18 April was declared winner of the election. He currently declared his intention to run for a second term under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).


Goodluck Ebele Azikwe Jonathan is a member of the Nigeria’s leading party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In 2007, Goodluck Jonathan declared his asset as N295,304,420 ($1,845,652 USD). However on 9 October 2014, the richestlifestyle.com website ranked Jonathan sixth on its list, claiming he is worth about $100m (62million Pounds, N16B Naira).


He is married to Patience Jonathan; they have two children, Arivera Jonathan and Amabi Jonathan.
