Today at the Slush conference in Helsinki, home-town hero Nokia - the part of the business that did not get sold off to Microsoft - has revealed its first device: a new tablet, the N1, which will run on Android. He also said that the company’s first product, the Z Launcher for Android devices, will be free of charge to download starting today.

“They said Nokia is dead,” Nokia’s head of devices Sebastian Nyström started out on stage today. “I say, they couldn’t be more wrong.” He then launched into a big and emotional (for a Finn!) speech about Nokia’s focus on great design, engineering and a consumer focus - areas the company could not leave behind with the sale.

This is the first device announced by the company post the sale. The other product has been an Android homescreen, the Z launcher, which now was clearly laying the groundwork for today’s integrated hardware news. The downloads over the first few days for this launcher passed 100,000 Nyström said today.

The device - or rather its box - had been teased in an announcement yesterday. Since then, some of the specs have been leaked out prior to the announcement being made on stage today.
