Project Description COMPASS is a USAID-funded project whose aim is to improve the quality of health and education services in Nigeria (Lagos, Nasarawa, Kano, Bauchi, and FCT). This project will focus on reproductive health, maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS and education at the primary school level. Project Duration May 2005 through May 2009 Position Location Abuja, Nigeria Position Summary The Teacher Training Advisor will manage the design of all teacher training-related materials and lessons, the mechanisms for training delivery, and the monitoring and evaluation tools for activities associated with pre-service teacher training, in-service teacher training, and interactive radio instruction for primary school teachers with particular focus on the needs of Islamiyyah school teachers. He/She will ensure that training activities include pedagogical instruction and subject matter instruction and will integrate the cross-cutting themes of girls’ education and school health and nutrition. Reporting and Supervision The Teacher Training Advisor will report to the National Senior Education Advisor in the Central Abuja Office. He/She will manage the central-level Interactive Radio Instruction Coordinator, Pre-Service Teacher Training Specialist, In-Service Teacher Training Coordinator, and the Instructional Materials Development Coordinator. Additionally, the delivery of all training activities will be done in close collaboration with the State Education Specialists and State Education Program Coordinators. Primary Responsibilities - Design the content of the teacher training modules for pre-service and in-service teacher training courses. - Design and manage the delivery mechanisms for pre-service and in-service teacher training courses. - In collaboration with the Interactive Radio Instruction Coordinator, develop Master Plans and Interactive Radio Instruction lessons for broadcast. - Develop teacher training strategies and work plans. - Design and implement monitoring and evaluation exercises for the teacher training activities. - Manage budget related to teacher training activities. - Ensure activities for pre-service, in-service, and interactive radio instruction are complimentary and mutually supportive. - Conduct regular meetings and maintain regular communication with Senior Education Advisor and state staff for the purposes of planning, monitoring, and troubleshooting. - Liaise with project stakeholders and other local partners. - With the Senior Education Advisor, recruit, hire and manage consultants as needed to carry out the development and implementation of the teacher training activities. - Ensure the timely production and submission of all education data and reports, including quarterly reports, monthly financial field reports, and other monitoring data for all teacher training activities. - Participate in national-level planning, reporting, and troubleshooting. Required Skills and Qualifications - Minimum three years of experience managing teacher training programs. - Minimum three years of experience designing training programs, including the training modules, delivery mechanisms, and monitoring tools. - Proven experience designing training modules that address pedagogical skill and subject specific skills. - Experience working with all areas of the project’s teacher training activities: pre-service, in-service, and interactive radio instruction. - Experience working on a donor-funded education project in Nigeria or similar experience at a national level. - Experience managing staff and project budgets. - Extensive knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural practices and issues of different target populations represented in the project (e.g. Muslims). - Master’s degree or equivalent in Curriculum Development (Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred). - Fluent in English. - Excellent written communications and extensive report writing experience. - Experience in designing and implementing teacher training activities for primary-school teachers and instructional material development and/or interactive radio instruction. - Knowledge of the issues associated with girls’ education, school health and nutrition, and basic education for Islammiyyah schools.
