The present day lives of human beings are much more hectic and unhealthy, than compared to the ones who lived ages ago. Our chaotic everyday lives have made us negligent towards our health. Little do we care about the food and water we consume and the cleanliness of the surroundings we live in. Here are few epidemics which have claimed many lives and have been rampant for years. It’s really important that we realize the impact of these killer diseases, so that we can do our best to prevent being in situations which can make us vulnerable to such health threats.

1. Small Pox
This disease lasted for around 10,000 years until the World Health Organization put an end to this killer in the year 1976. The symptoms include fever and bubble formations all over the body. It is reported that around 300 million people felly prey to this disease in the 20th century.

2. The Plague
The symptoms of this killer contagious disease include cold, followed by swelling in the groin area and portions of the neck. The plague had reportedly claimed around 60% of London’s and 50% of Paris’ populations respectively during the medieval period.

3. Ebola
The chances of death for a person suffering from this disease can vary between 25-90%. This epidemic has apparently originated from Africa. Scientists and researchers are yet to find a cure.

4. Diarrhea
This disease which is said to be water-borne, causes continuous loose stools, making the body dehydrated. If the symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks, then it can be life threatening.

5. Tuberculosis
The common symptoms of this disease which affects the lungs are chronic cough accompanied by blood sputum, loss of weight and night sweats.

6. SARS
Also known as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the SARS disease which is said to have originated in China, has spread to over 37 countries. It has reportedly claimed around 770 lives of the over 8000 people who were infected.

7. Leprosy
An infectious disease which causes damage of the nerves of Arms and legs. However, Leprosy is not as contagious as the other deadly diseases on this list. It can spread through exchange of fluids and continuous interactions with the infected person.

8. HIV/AIDS
Caused by the Human Immuno-deficiency virus or the HIV, AIDS is one of the most deadliest diseases of all time. Its caused by exchange of body fluids with an infected person, usually during sexual intercourse and blood transfusion. No permanent cure has been found as yet.

9. Malaria
Malaria is a disease caused by the bite of a female ‘Anopheles’ mosquito. It can spread by transmission of blood from an infected person to a healthy human. An infected pregnant mother can pass on the virus to her fetus. Medicines can usually treat the malarial parasite in the blood.

10. Lung Cancer
It’s usually caused due to excessive smoking. The symptoms include excessive cough, even a sneeze would really hurt near the chest region. Lung cancer claims more than 1 million people annually.

11. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD)
Yet another dangerous disease caused by excessive smoking. It causes extreme damage to the lungs.

12. Cholera
It’s usually transmitted through water, which causes electrolyte imbalance in the body. The best solution to recover from this disease is an oral rehydration therapy. Cholera kills around 100,000 people every year, as observed by a survey conducted in 2010.

13. Yellow Fever
It is caused by the bite of a female mosquito. The disease is very prominent in parts of Africa and South America. The symptoms include, nausea, backache and fever, which eventually reduces,in most cases.

14. Dengue
The infected person first falls sick for a period which may last anywhere between 2-7 days, later he/she starts developing the usual symptoms. The other symptoms include severe headache, bleeding in the gums and nose, rashes and pain in the eyes.

15. Perinatal Conditions
An estimated 500,000 women across the world succumb to complications during pregnancy such as severe bleeding or hemorrhage and unsafe abortions. The possibilities are medical carelessness and lack of nutrition during pregnancy.

16. Lower Respiratory Infections
It can be further classified into two categories: pneumonia and bronchitis. The symptoms include sore throat, difficulty in breathing and runny nose. The cause could be a bacteria or virus. The disease claims a little more than 3 million people every year

17. Ischemic Heart Disease
Due to a block in the arteries, the heart fails to receive adequate supply of blood and oxygen, which could prove fatal. Getting blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure regularly checked are great preventive measures. This disease claims more than 7 million lives each year.

18. Measles
Measles is a highly contagious disease, which contracts to 90% of those who interact with the infected people. Though most victims do survive, complication may occur at times, which may lead to even death.

19. Meningitis
It’s a condition where the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord are damaged. Patients suffering from Meningitis usually suffer from head ache, altered state of consciousness and disability to tolerated loud noises or light.

20. Parkinson’s disease
This disease which attacks the brain, affects the muscles of the body, usually resulting in the failure in functioning of either arms or legs. It usually causes stiffness of muscles and constant shakes or ‘tremors’ of the affected body part.

21. Elephantiasis
It leads to enormous swelling in the arms and legs. The disease is caused by a female mosquito, which injects a parasite called the ‘Filial Worm’, while biting a victim. The disease also causes muscle pains, fever and dizziness.

22. Progeria
A genetic disorder which makes children to age really fast. These kids may seem normal at birth but eventually slow growth and hair loss occurs. Most of these affected kids die due to heart problems.

23. Syphilis
It’s one of the most dreaded sexually transmitted diseases after AIDS. Around 12 million people are affected every year by this killer epidemic, with most victims belonging to the developing countries. Symptoms can range from a few rashes to heart problems.

24. Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease which affects the central nervous system of the infected person. The symptoms include hallucinations, convulsions and drooling. The symptoms may start to appear anywhere between 1 to 3 months after getting infected. Most of the rabies cases occur due to dog bites.

25. H1N1
This is also known as the ‘swine flu’ syndrome. A large number of people across the world had got affected by it during its outbreak in 2009. An infected person can pass on the virus to a healthy human through cough or sneeze, the virus thus spreads through the air.Cough, fever and sore throat are the common symptoms of swine flu.
