Just as u said; low fuel consumption and availability of spareparts. Peug 406 should be his prime choice not audi or otherwise he'll drive a car a month in a year and save up for 11 months for repair bills cos German vehicles could be unpredictable at times in maintenance costs.

As an addition to what abrahamolusoji said earlier;

Peugeot 406 is relatively cheap in terms of maintenance. It uses two version of engines (black top approx 80k) and (aluminium top about 170k prestige version).

The body parts are also cheap and available together with the suspension though not all.

It is a strong vehicle and kind of charges faster on longer journeys.

My only headache with it is that it is very rare to get it in Auto drive unless the one converted here in Nigeria . For ruggedity and fuel economy, it is very ok.

many people is of the opinion that when 406 reaches 180k mille, it will start developing electrical fault hence many try to sell it off before such problems.

@ seriousthing When such problem comes up a specialist in auto rewire can handle it, not a serious issue.

Please advice that guy to go and save his monthly 50k salary and take care of himself. Any car you will buy on that salary will gulp your whole monthly salary in maintenance.
My advice is for him to upgrade and get a new job that will pay him well to drive a better car or continue saving as civil servant. Austerity measures will be taken over Nigeria and soon most government offices will be finding it difficult to pay salaries. I hope you take this advice to your friend.

Ageing is normal occurrence. Even to humans. If u want d car to age gracefully, treat it well. Forget about all the tales of woes peddled around about peugs,it's because so many pple opened the hood of their pugs to halfbaked mechanics cum rewires.-u can imagine wat will happen when u give a carpenter ur cloth to sew; awful job!.
What u need to do is ensure u get a good one, scan it, maintain it regularly, don't allow novices wash ur engines, minimise incursion into flood, and I tell u u'll never regret it. In my opinion it's d ideal car for Nigerian roads.

Honestly, You need a serious personal development course for mindset shift. Because such your mindset could not only lead one to frustrated life, but depression and suicide. That's a quiet desperate frustrated life!

victor, my friend have saved up to 750k to buy a car. secondly there are people with the less salary that owns a car.
from my experience, I own two cars. one is Toyota carina e wagon (my delight) and the second is golf 3 wagon. I use the carine e every day, ranging from school runs to office things. the car is 18 months with me now and I even bought it used. I have never spent 15k on that car in any month since purchase. I service it once in 3 months and I spend 8k on fuel monthly.
so your believe that my friend cannot buy a car is far lie.

What is this one saying sef....
Even someone with 30k salary in my neighbourhood drives 2001 Camry and he is still alive, you dont need 200k a month salary to own a car. I have driven my EOD for 3yrs and yet to carry out any major repairs except normal servicing which I do once a year, 50k salary is more than enough to own a car especially if he is getting a sound tokunbo car.

My friend go park well. I think your mindset is poor too because we all want to own a car thinking that its a luxury when in the actual sense its a liability. All these people encouraging him will not be there when the problem starts. You think i don't know people who buy cars and end up parking it after two months...

See your life. You service your EOD once in a year? Do you drive the car at all or you park it in your garage?

Na for 50k salary you go buy fuel, service car, chop for one month, pay house rent, and take care of your other personal needs.
All of you are crazy because I don't buy that idea and will never advice anyone to buy a car with that salary!

I am not sure you are my friend because I don't find time to hang out with people with such mindset like yours anymore; people that are so negative that they either keep pulling me down or add nothing positive into my life.

But let me give you some personal development tips for free, since you want to be my friend.

If you see a problem as a problem, then it becomes negative. But if you see a problem as an opportunity to grow and become bigger than what you are, then it becomes positive. Just like Jim Rohn once said, "Don't wish for less problems. Rather wish for more wisdom. Don't wish for less challenge, wish for more skills. Accept a challenge, because you can't grow without one".

My point is, if you see a car as a liability, it becomes a problem for you. But if you see it as an asset, then it changes your life for the better by opening more doors for greater things in life, and most importantly, prosperity and peace.

Most people see their smart phones as liabilities that eat deep into their earnings by subscribing internet. But some see theirs as big enterprise, by transforming them to asset and make fortune out of it.

Everything around you is an asset if you want to see it that way. It's all about "Mindset". The rich becomes richer because of the way they think, not because of what they have.

The moment you become a car owner, your levels have changed. What you choose to do with that level to become bigger than where/what you are, is left for you. I know what I was earning when I acquired my first car. Now how many cars have I owned since then? How many do I currently own? How many do i still want to add?

Just like Earl Nightingale said, "We become what we think about". Where or what you are today is exactly where and what you want to be, whether you want to admit that or not. Energy flows where your focus goes. Your mind is the greatest asset on Earth. But people take it for granted because its free. After all, we place more value on what we spend money to acquire. Be careful what goes through your mind. Thinking negative about yourself or what you have or what you believe you can't have will kill your future.

Finally. Don't Miss Anything! Life is too short to live predictable miserable life. Get out of that comfort zone, take up challenges, grow and become bigger than your problems. But to do that, you have to change that your mental blueprint. When you do, you can then become my friend and we can hang out and have some 1759 together someplace.

Op,

Tell your friend to go ahead and buy the car if that's what he wish to have. He is on his way to prosperity.

Fellow nairalanders, the purpose and aim of this thread has been defeated. It has turned to a thread of insult and abuse. Yet my friend has not gotten concrete reasons for either of the cars which he intends to buy. Pls lets go back to d drawing board.

@ Export1,

The way and manner you have been going round Car Talk, committing plagiarism in almost every thread is becoming alarming. This is exactly what caused Linda Ikeji's blog downfall not long ago. Copying peoples work and taking the credit for what you didn't create. If you can copy someone's work, be disciplined enough to quote the creator or provide the source.

Car Talk Moderators, don't allow what happened to Linda Ikejis blog happen to Nairaland because of this section.

yea" u guys are both saying the truth" it cost a lot to adequately maintain a vehicle" even a brand new car still requires due maintenance. but d fact is that the icon here is willing to buy either of the car. So my advice for uu is to buy an audi *A4. It's a fine garman car with less complex futures like that of peugeot 406. relatively 406 is a legalized fast car, but wit d intense of ur salary and state A4 is better because it's cheaper, and more economical around. boths cars are nearly of the same grade of performance.
