Sycophancy is a growth industry in Nigerian public life. Even by that standard, Doyin Okupe, one of President Goodluck Jonathan’s aides, seems to have gone over. According to him, critics, especially rivals of President Jonathan for the 2015 elections should be sent to psychiatrists for necessary examination.

In addition, according to Doyin Okupe, the administration of Goodluck Jonathan is the best since Nigeria attained independence in 1960. Okupe would do well to recall his assessment of his (NPN) party’s assessment of President Shehu Shagari between 1979 and 1983, when he was one of the party’s spokesmen in Lagos State.

Between 1960 and now was also one of Okupe’s parties, the NRC. And of course, the past is too recent to forget how Okupe hailed Obasanjo without any reservation. Eventually they parted in acrimony, such that made Okupe (to) pitch camp with PDP members at national and Ogun State levels who effectively isolated former President Obasanjo in the PDP.

By the way, Okupe in assessing Jonathan, was re-acting to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s criticisms of Jonathan’s administration in anticipation of 2015 elections.

The concern is not so much Okupe’s unreliable submissions when he speaks for Jonathan. The assurance of regular power supply by now? The guarantee that Boko Haram would soonest be consigned into history? More could be listed.

Rather, the language and ever aggressive posture of a man presumed to be analysing President Jonathan to Nigerians and foreigners are very very offensive, and can only alienate Jonathan from the sympathy and understanding of Nigerians on the enormity of the problems facing his administration.

There could hardly be any of Jonathan’s predecessor who escaped public criticisms, and very harshly at that. Yet never in our history was any rival or challenger of our past leaders regarded as a potential patient of a psychiatrist. Crude and uncivilized language from the office of the first citizen in the land? Nowhere in the world but Nigeria as we now experience.

It is not clear if Jonathan endorses Okupe’s latest reckless outburst. Pity Doyin Okupe? When former President Obasanjo appointed Okupe as his media aide, there was substantial criticism of his choice but I supported him. Now regretfully, I withdraw that support. As if that will reform him.

All the same, Doyin Okupe is advised to go into history. Nnamdi Azikiwe once admonished that no condition is permanent. Before Doyin Okupe, there was once an Ahmed Gulak at Aso Rock, far less acerbic than Doyin Okupe. But the man thought himself more ‘Jonathan’ than Goodluck Jonathan. Even Jonathan eventually became disgusted in total disapproval of Gulak’s incorrigibly toxic language, still less than Okupe’s.

Only days after his last needless provocative outburst against Jonathan’s rivals, Gulak was sent packing from Aso Rock. Before Gulak was General Andrew Azazi, then National Security Adviser to Jonathan. He later died in a helicopter crash in Bayelsa. While in office, Azazi picked up the fight on Jonathan’s behalf against PDP, which he (Azazi) boldly and publicly described as Jonathan’s major problem.

Jonathan seemed to panic and rather dismissed General Azazi than lose PDP’s support, a support which is far less forthcoming today. If only Okupe can love himself. In these matters, there is no qualm in sacrificing a self-presumed Goebells, once the need arises.

Okupe also alluded to those he described as threatening to make Nigeria ungovernable for Jonathan. Only one Northern politician said so. He is not only alive but has also since, for obvious reasons, converted to advocate of Jonathan after a visit to Aso Rock. His name is Tanko Yakassai.

Contrary to political mischief, inherited and transferred prejudice, Muhammadu Buhari never threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable. Atiku Abubakar never threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable. Rabiu Kwankwaso never so threatened. Neither did Sule Lamido or any other Northerner for that matter. But Jonathan’s latest recruit, Tanko Yakassai.

The lesson Doyin Okupe will learn eventually is that the bigger the man, the heavier the fall.

Nice One

All okupe cares about like every other employee is his job, nothing more. He will do everything to safe guard it. Does it even matter to him if Nigeria is burning?

Essay reads to me like someone who does not know much about Nigeria.
A country where people can sell their own mother for money, how much more telling ordinary bare-faced lies to protect "oga".
Such people are lost cause, having sold their soul for mammon.

Okupe is able to tell such blatant lies because of the massive ignorance of the populace. The pple are misinformed and hardly go on any form of research or are equipped with analytical thinking to see beyond lies propagated.
To me, Okupe is a sick individual who's madness was induced by money and bigotry.
