PORT HARCOURT— SIXTEEN aggrieved governorship aspirants of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State, yesterday, urged the screening committee of the party in Port Harcourt to dismiss petitions alleging that some of them were not members of the party.
The committee screening Assembly and governorship aspirants of the party in the South-South zone commenced work at the party’s South South zonal secretariat in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Professor Israel Owate, who spoke for the aggrieved aspirants at the venue of the screening exercise, said the petitions were allegedly sponsored by one of the governorship aspirants of the party, claiming that most of the 16 aspirants were not members of the party.
Urging the screening committee to disregard the petition, Owate said it was regrettable that one of the aspirants could make such allegations against the other aspirants.
“Just yesterday, at the governorship screening panel, most prominent aspirants were confronted with spurious, trumped up petitions alleging that the aspirants are not members of the PDP in Rivers State. These are the same aspirants who had been certified as members of the PDP by the National Working Committee, which issued the interest and nomination forms and from whom the state and the South South zonal secretariats had collected N3 million and N2 million respectively as dues and administrative costs. We are, however, hopeful that the screening committee shall take the appropriate position by dismissing these petitions,” he said.
