The University of Jos has been shut down after a protest by students over hike in fees turned violent. The protest started day before yesterday morning with students holding university administrators hostage in their offices.

Security officials where later called in yesterday when the protest continued to calm the situation. But a soldier attached to the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis (STF), instead of calming the situation opened fire on protesters leaving at least 8 students with gun wounds including a blind one.

The University Registrar, Jully Dandam, after a hurriedly convened management meeting, announced the institution will remain closed till further notice.

The school management also ordered all students to vacate the campus before 2 p.m. yesterday as a way of halting the violence and stopping the crisis from spreading to other parts of the state.

None of the students has died, but are presently receiving treatment. The Special Taskforce (STF) spokesperson has however denied a soldier with them shot the wounded students, but confirmed they had gun wounds, but might be from other security officers invited by the school management

Just two points...
1. The last time LASU and OAU the great protested against hike in their school fees, some students of this varsity said we're coward that protest is not the best for of tool that we can use but now it's their turn... just go home and relax, pray that it won't take too much time for you to be call back!

2. Over the years, the best way for us to show our grievances over a said issue by the students is through protest. Soyinka can not deny that fact!
What we need to do is to support ASUU, say no to this naive FG and tell them that they're nothing without the students.
We mustn't still fold our hands and pray that a manna will fall from heaven. Manna has already fallen, let's pick ours and show our leaders that we're not gullible!
