A number of organizations, Governments and institutions offer financial opportunities and scholarship awards for students from different part of the world to study abroad. The financial awards are offered for either undergraduate or postgraduate students or both; for African students particularly, for developing countries or international students generally. However students from Africa are as eligible to apply as any other candidate and stand better or equal chances of being awarded a scholarship.

Below is a long list of Scholarships for African students offered annually to study abroad. These scholarships are offered annually at the time of publishing this list. If the deadline has passed, you can take note of them for future application.
1. Commonwealth Scholarship

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Approximately 200-230 scholarships are awarded each year.

2. OFID Scholarship Award

Each year the OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) calls for application for qualified undergraduate students prospecting to pursue masters degree to apply for the OFID Scholarship. The OFID Scholarship is awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner will receive up to US$100,000

3. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) for African Students

The Australia Awards for Africa is an initiative of the Australian Government aimed to maximize the benefit of the Australian Government’s extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties between Australia and neighboring African Countries. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are available for full-time Postgraduate Diploma or Master Degree studies for African Nationals at Australian universities. 4. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150 awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).

Nominations from agencies must be received in London by 31 December in the year preceding the award.

5. 200 Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for Developing Countries

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing Countries to study for Undergraduate and Master’s degree programme. The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10.000.(€ 1098.7249)

6. UCL/ AET Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries UK

University College London (UCL) and the Africa Educational Trust (AET) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable students from Africa, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Two full bursaries are available annually. Each bursary consists of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s programme of study, as well as economy air travel to/from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree programme.

7. Italy- UCSC Scholarship for African Students

UCSC, Italy offer 12 full Masters scholarships that include tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full tuition and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. The full scholarships include tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates that do not qualify for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the expense of the student.

8. VLIR- UOS Masters Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study for a master or training programme in Flanders, Belgium. 180 Masters & 70 training Scholarships in Belgium will be awarded for students from Developing countries in 2012 (50% of African students and almost 50% for Women). The scholarship covers all related expenses (full cost).

9. UCL – United World Colleges – Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries, UK

The University College London (UCL) collaborates with the United World Colleges (UWC) in a financial aid scheme to enable graduates of UWC, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Each bursary will consist of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s programme of study, as well as international economy air travel to/from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree programme.

10. Reach Oxford Scholarships for Undergraduate Students for Developing Countries, University of Oxford

A number of Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK under any undergraduate course of study, except Medicine due to the course length and expense. The scholarship covers University and college fees, full grant for living expenses, return flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.
