We live in exciting times; Glo has brought to Nigeria a revolution in the communication sector.

BlacBerry will definitely revolutionize the way business is done and it will make life easy for the sales force. I will like to know from Nigerians in diaspora how Black Berry has aided businesses practices wherever they are?

I am a contractor at a major insurance company in Chicago. Almost all the employees (at least on the IT side) carry a blackberry. The primary purpose is to be able to read/respond to email from pretty much anywhere in the US. It's my understanding that the top level managers even take their's internationally and roam with it. The key thing is instant accessibility. A lot of a key services and applications are setup via UNIX scripts to send out a status email to let us know if something goes wrong. So, if a particular application crashes, the managers will now right away and appropriate action can be taken.

On a side note, all US mobile phone numbers have an associated email. So, depending on the carrier, it will be phonenumber@tmomail.net for tmobile users, etc. So, some of these apps can be setup to send an email(actually a 160 character limit text) to any regular mobile phone. But with the blackberry, there is no limit on what can pushed to the device.

I don't know much about BlackBerry but with the exception of push email facilities, how does it differ from a GPRS enabled PDA?

My point is I can already access my corporate email on the move with my PDA via GPRS so whilst the arrival of BlackBerry in Nigeria is certainly welcome, I don't quite see how it will revolutionize the way business is done here in Nigeria or am I missing something?
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by diddy4(m): 3:38pm On Aug 17, 2006
yeah, was just thinking the same thing. what is d difference btw the blackberry and most PDAs out there that have more functionalities than just sending email and ish? the blackberry is aiight and its entrance to the naija market is welcomed but the hype about it is too much cuzz i know so many PDA's out there that are better than blackberry and more funtional than some laptops.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by sholatech(m): 3:48pm On Aug 17, 2006
No Big Deal in Blackberry!!! and no big deal with Globalcom bringing it. You can buy any off-the-shelf and configure with MTN/Vmobile SIMS. You can get good bargains for $150 though i dont know how much Globalcom is selling theirs.
Yes, mobile phones for chatting can be a good productivity tool, but check out the pricing for the email service, as against exchanging SMS with colleagues!

If you have a PDA on a GPRS network, you wont need a blackberry!!!
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by diyobdw(f): 6:03pm On Aug 17, 2006
@sholatech
guess freelance can tell us more on the pricing. It damn too high!

but the idea it not just to get your emails it sholud also give u access to some other vital features like contacts and calendar and other company applications.Which needs to be secured!

Glo might be make much noise but i bet they have a good competitior that can knock them hands down here in nigeria! cheesy

BlackBerry devices gateways for computer attacks
A California computer security specialist released software on Monday to show that hackers can attack networks through widely popular BlackBerry handheld devices.

Jesse D'Aguanno of Praetorian Global made a "BlackBerry Attack Toolkit" demonstration available for download at the company's website along with 'BBProxy' software that exploits the vulnerability.

"The premise is the BlackBerry device that everyone carries around in their holsters is actually a computer constantly connected to your network," D'Aguanno said.

"So, someone can take over the device, or load a virus on it covertly."

D'Aguanno hid attacker software code in a tic-tac-toe game that, if downloaded and played on a BlackBerry, secretly invaded the network linked to the handled device.

An "attack vector" described by D'Aguanno during a presentation at a recent DefCon hackers conference in Las Vegas was to e-mail BlackBerry users a link and trick them into downloading the malicious software cloaked in the game.

The devices, made by Research In Motion in Canada, would then act as doorways that let hackers slip behind fire walls and seek out unprotected computers in a company's network, according to D'Aguanno.

"One of the biggest hurdles for an actual attacker is to get themselves on the internal network," D'Aguanno said. "Going head-on is usually not the smart way to go because of beefy fire walls and all that.

"But, if you get yourself inside the network, there are vulnerable machines, the defenses aren't as formidable because they rely on the outer walls."

D'Aguanno said that the potential for the BBProxy version released on Monday to be used maliciously was "nil" and that it was intended to show network administrators that the threat of attack via BlackBerry devices was real.

"The general thinking around the BlackBerry and handheld devices as a whole needs to be reformed," D'Aguanno said. "You need to secure the rest of your network from malicious attacks from that medium."

Another possible form of attack was "blackjacking", or hijacking legitimate users' BlackBerry devices and replacing them on the network with rogue devices, D'Aguanno said.

The components of business enterprise computer servers that support mobile data devices should be isolated instead of being linked in ways that allow unfettered access to entire networks, he advised.

Downloading of third-party applications to BlackBerry or similar devices should be prevented, according to D'Aguanno. "It is kind of a new playground, as far as a way into a network," D'Aguanno said, adding he knew of no successful hacker attacks via BlackBerry.

"I have a BlackBerry. I think they are great things, but you have to treat them like any untrusted computer with access to your network.

Freelance i knew you will do that! grin

Nice sale write-up or proposal.

But who need blackberry in the real sense?
Is it not too expensive even for the so called big boys.
(whom would arleady have sassy & high end phone with similar features like pop3 etc)
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by sholatech(m): 3:39pm On Aug 18, 2006
Very very funny!
You can get Blackberry for $100
you can ship it to Nigeria for about $60
$200 gives you about 25,000 naira.
Thieves!!
My question is, since i have my own Blackberry, how much will it cost Glo to configure it for me?
What if i dont use 10MB per month on the Go!
What a rip-off!!
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by tellmemore(m): 9:42am On Aug 19, 2006
You guys can take your case to court.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by naomijt(f): 9:42am On Aug 19, 2006
The truth is that Glomobile is only drumming up hype. I wonder how their blackberry solution is going to revolutionalise business in Nigeria. Quite a number of businesses have been revolutionalised as far back as April 2003 (when Glo did not exist). For example, our staff at DomainStandard.net have been using smartphones for mobile email, fax and web for years, and we have consulted for others and helped them do same.

Again, there are more functional and more cost-effective solutions in the market than Glo' blackberry. My boss uses the Nokia E61, which costs fourty-something thousand, and the blackberry 7290 does not even come close in terms of features, functionality and performance.

You may want to take a look at this: http://yomi.domainstandard.net/mobile_web/E61_or_blackberry/
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by peacy(f): 11:07am On Aug 19, 2006
plz naira's , is blackberry, a phone! dat is configured, ? by GLO network or a programmme, or, wat!, i need 2 know,
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by naomijt(f): 12:23pm On Aug 19, 2006
@peacy: Blackberry is BOTH a device and a service.

You can use a blackberry service even if you do not own a Blackberry device. There are several smartphones and a few mobile phones that are blackberry-compatible. Hope that helps.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by Bossman(m): 8:07pm On Aug 19, 2006
Yes. I would just like to add that blackberry (BB) is a phone/device that can be configured to work on any network. Also, a lot of smart phones/PDA's can now do pretty much the same things that a BB can do.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by donmayor(m): 8:19pm On Aug 19, 2006
Why is glo wasting so much moni on unnecessary advert wink, They understand the Nigerian mentality, even though many Nigerians would buy the phone without using any of the functions, they bought it cos of the "big boy and big girls" thing glo is putting on the ads.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by drogba(m): 12:25am On Aug 20, 2006
Nokia E61 or motorola Q are surely more advanced than this crap BB.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by crito(m): 5:07am On Aug 22, 2006
thumbs up to glo.
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by diyobdw(f): 8:07am On Aug 22, 2006
I see that nigerians can be spoonfeed with nonsense and they glup it down like that! grin these days

the target for BB in nigeria is very lil' so they need to make it seem like a big deal.At least say Glo is still active cheesy
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by dejisys(m): 8:44am On Aug 22, 2006
The competetion continues. MTN was working on bringing in BlackBerry as a packaged service, but Glo got it done much faster!
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by diyobdw(f): 9:19am On Aug 22, 2006
are u sure glo was faster or MTN saw the loop holes first
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by dejisys(m): 10:35am On Aug 22, 2006
Authoritative answer: MTN was stunned! So they opted to launch the "Ring back tones" instead, which they considered a "small fish"
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by diyobdw(f): 3:33pm On Aug 22, 2006
How is that a competitive feature for BB?

BB is not really da boom as it not a majority product tongue
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by SHOT(m): 4:19pm On Aug 25, 2006
i feel what GLO is up to but is it really what we need presently or next. the pricing is just terrible and unfriendly at all.

just got a blackberry from a cousin but i think i'll prefer my pocket pc any time.

so if u need a blackberry(used) pls holla its a 7730 model.

Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by adeg(m): 6:59pm On Sep 08, 2006
Blackberry is a hype. PURE AND SIMPLE. It is a bunch of UGLY device with no special advantage whatever over a PocketPC Phone powered with Windows Mobile 5.0
AND you still pay 10k MONTHLY!! for the push mail facility and others that is AVAILABLE free of charge on any PocketPC Phone powered with Windows Mobile 5.0 like g-Smart & Eten (from www.buyright.biz), iMate jam, others with a lot of useful applications

Glo is playing on the Naija 'Big Boys and Girls' mentality

It is a waste of money from my point of view and people will soon know it for what it really is
Re: Blackberry In Nigeria: Thanks to Glo by donmayor(m): 7:38pm On Sep 08, 2006
Waste of money. There's a new blackberry in town and I guess glo would still stick to the old version ripping "big boys and girls" off
