The Flailing Kitten On Allen Avenue by Nobody: 5:00pm On Dec 15, 2014 |
There was this SUV in front of me, crawling along Allen Avenue in morning rush hour Lagos traffic and ignoring the persistent drone of my horn. I waited for the beat up, unwieldy Toyota Highlander to veer a little bit too far to the right and then swung to the left and I nimbly accelerated my zippy 1.5l sedan around the clumsy bastard and smiled to myself as the fat, walrus-looking dude in the driver's seat suddenly found himself trapped in position as both lanes of traffic flowed around him, like an overweight stripper suddenly and humiliatingly exposed when the overhead lights at the Spearmint Rhino suddenly come on mid-twerk. The corner of my eyes picked out something unusual on the other side of the road and I turned to see what it was. On the road in the middle of the oncoming lane, there was a little black kitten with white stripes. The kitten was dying. It seemed to have been partially run over and was seriously injured. It was thrashing and flailing around uncontrollably, with all 4 limbs and tail scrabbling furiously. It's head seemed to have partially caved in. There was this horrifying sound coming out of it, like a miniature human baby in mortal distress and there was blood and...and...stuff everywhere. I didn't realise I had stalled my engine in a horrified trance until I heard a familiar chorus of vehicle horns, police sirens and Lagos drivers calling down copious amounts of evil on my ancestors behind me. I just about managed to complete the commute to work without losing the unsettled contents of my stomach but all day this picture would not leave my mind. I consoled myself by thinking maybe it only broke a limb, maybe someone will take pity on this helpless creature and take it to a vet. Then realism kicked in and then I thought maybe some people around will at least take it off the road and strangle it so it doesn't have to suffer any further, and then bury it. I took my lunch break two hours later than usual because I needed to go to the bank and I wanted to avoid a crowded lunchtime banking hall. I drove along slowly, keeping my eyes peeled for any sign of a little dead cat. Nothing. I relaxed as I parked and entered GTB. Someone had indeed taken it away for help or at least a less tortuous end. For some reason this was a really comforting thought. The security door at the entrance of GTB refused to let me in 4 times. I took out my phones, earphones, keys, pen, watch and belt. Still it wouldn't let me in. The security guard then asked me with a straight face if I had any metallic tooth fillings. I couldn't make out if he was taking the piss or if he was serious. In any case, the door decided to let me in on the 5th attempt and I went in to attend to my business after fixing him with a hard stare. There are no u-turn gaps on Allen Avenue and so I had to go down to Allen roundabout and go around to get into the opposite lane. For some reason there was heavy traffic and so I was condemned to crawling along as my lunch break ticked away, cursing the assorted idiocies and idiosyncrasies of Lagos drivers. I can't say what took my eyes there - maybe I wanted to reassure myself that it had been taken away to somewhere better. Maybe I wanted to pretend I imagined the entire thing. Whatever the reason, I turned to look at the spot where I saw the dying kitten this morning. As a tricycle rumbled past I saw a black and white striped fur coat plastered to the road surface with a few innards scattered about, also flattened. I didn't eat lunch today. I am rather upset. 9 Likes 1 Share |

The world is cold and heartless. Most people don't even give a damn about anyone or anything other than themselves. And the funny thing is that they would impose it on others that it's necessary to care for them, and others like them support them. This is one sad story in millions and millions. People see things but don't care to act, that's it. 4 Likes |

Don't blame the African brothers and sisters, black and white kitten or what did you call it? Some folks who have been battling with one grandma from the village in their dreams won't take it easily with a kitten at the centre of the road, it could be one of the grandma, they would say to themselves. #SOME_Africans'MENTALITY 3 Likes |

I know exactly how you feel my brother, I have felt like that for animals many times. I have also come to discover that love is slowly ebbing away from our society and human beings are becoming increasingly selfish and self-centered. We no longer care about what happens to our fellow human beings to to talk of animals. These days you hear your number screaming and you know they could be in trouble but turn the other way and continue doing what you were doing without giving a damn. Things were very different when I was a boy; people loved and cared for one another. God help us. 3 Likes |
