Licenses - Which One?! by Chester71: 2:15pm On Aug 12, 2006
Dear All,

We, an international organization with legal entities in Nigeria,  are asked for several projects to offer wireless services in buildings such as hotels etc.

The license structure for the use of standard wifi equipment such as routers, and offering our service as a local ISP to the guests is totally unclear to us.

NCC's website seems to be a maze, and sometimes makes it looks like you pay millions of Naira's, sometimes claiming it's 100 us dollars per year.

If we make use of an already existing licensed VSAT supplier to supply us with the dish and access, which license(s) would we need, against what price(s)?

I hope you can shed some light on this for us.

This is a hard one. We have subscribed to 2 VSAT suppliers, one of which was registered with NCC so I guess their licences covered our operations. We have currently deactivated our VSAT and are hooked up through microwave connection to a new subscriber who is also licensed by NCC.

Last week a new Act was passed which requires cyber cafes, ISPs and foreign carriers like Newskies, Intelsat etc to register with EFCC. They did not mention anything about fees though.

Its a terrible situation.

U definitely need isp license from ncc.it costs about $4200 to secure & 4 months to process.you also pay 2.5% of your turnover to ncc every year end as operating levy. You can work with an existing licensee like my company since your major focus is multidwelling units.
