We Are Our Own Problem In The North - Sultan Of Sokoto by KEVIND: 10:19pm On Dec 24, 2014
Respected Islamic cleric and Sultan of Sokoto Dr. Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III has said that the present insecurity and other associated challenges tearing the northern region apart were caused by the region itself.
The traditional ruler said this while speaking in Kaduna at a meeting of the Northern Governors Peace and Reconciliation Committee. He noted that the problem of the north will remain the problem of the entire country, since the north could not be left with its problems alone.
The Sultan, who doubles as the president, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and president-general of the Jamatul Nasril Islam (JNI), disclosed that peace talk was the best way to resolve violence or conflicts.

He said that though traditional and religious leaders had played their own part, they should not relent on their effort until the challenges are brought under control.
The monarch, however, lamented it was so sad that the government was yet to address the issue of security challenges in the nation.

He said: “Let us sit and talk freely and articulate positions that will bring us out of the quagmire we put ourselves in, ” he said. “It is important that the religious and traditional rulers from our various states sit together so that each and every one of us will talk freely…”

The Sultan added that: “Whatever that is happening in the north is our own doing, because we did not do what we were supposed to do. And since we know that, we have to solve our problems ourselves. So, I think, it is not a bad idea that the committee was set up.

“We wrote a memo of about nine pages or thereabouts covering various issues affecting the country and the north in particular to the then acting president and now president Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan… it was at the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) where we suggested solutions to the problems.

“Northern Council of Traditional Rulers met and also articulated solutions to problems of the north to the northern governors, but we don’t know what happened to the recommendations at the various authorities.

“If our recommendations had been implemented, we would have been singing a different tune in handling the challenges.”

On the issue of trying to Islamize the country as insinuated in some quarters, the Sultan affirmed that it was impossible for anybody to Islamize or Christianize the country. “If anybody thinks he can Islamize or Christianize the country, he must be dreaming,” he stated, adding that politicians must have the fear of God in whatever they do: “If they want to solve the problem of this country they will, because they have the resources to do so.

“There is little religious leaders can do without the support of the constitutional right to do certain things, but we must always watch our utterances and in making comments you cannot substantiate.”

In his own remarks, John Cardinal Onaiyekan attributed the security challenges facing the north and the country in general to the high level of poverty in the country and the region in particular.

The meeting of the Northern Governors Peace and Reconciliation Committee was attended by the Sultan as well as the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Zainab Abba Haliru AGREES THUS:

''I hear that the Economist of London is calling our government clueless. Hehehe...in my opinion, it is the Economist that are actually clueless in their views about our government. That they have not keyed into the the chicaneries of the so called Northern leaders is shocking. That they have totally missed the fact that social conventions are responsible for the degeneration of the North is very surprising. The North did not degenerate in five years. It started from the time when our underaged sons we left as almajiris, and subjected to all sorts of abuse and dehumanisation. Abuse makes the reptilian brain over active, Hence , Shekau. When our underaged daughters were married off before they were old enough to raise kids properly. It started from the day the so called elders decided to loot us bare. The BH problem started long before Jonathan and will continue long after wards, until we in the North change adjust our structure to suit the times.
It is only a clueless person that will call our government clueless because of this BH issue.''
And she has been given support by none other person than the

GODFATHER OF THE MUSLIM NORTH - Sultan of Sokot

Sultan, if you acknowledge that, then it can be a starting point, the next step should be how to resolve it.

Speak out against evil BH, advice your imams to denounce BH in their mosque. Don't just sit, look and do nothing. Be proactive, the north is your home, where are guys gonna run to if you allow BH to destroy your home. Whom are you gonna rule if BH kill all your people.

The Sultan added that: “Whatever that is happening in the north is our own doing, because we did not do what we were supposed to do.
The Sultan got this one right. Until Northern Leaders wake up to reality and face the challenges facing the region squarely, the problem of extremism and insecurity will persist.

The first step towards solving a problem is recognizing the problem.

Dude keep shut if you don't know what's going on in the north. Most prominent northerners have been denouncing BH from time immemorial...A prominent Islamic scholar was killed in Kano for speaking against BH in the north... These dudes are trying their best to curtail the activities of BH but there is nothing they can do if the Government ain't supportive..

A former head of states once said" if insurgency lasts for 24hours, no doubt the Government is involved"
Soldiers keep complaining of not being well equipped. The corruption in the Nigerian army can never be compared to the level of corruption in NNPC. And we have a president who has the power to do and undo??....The superior officers in the Nigerian army keep siphoning funds meant for the upkeep of Junior officers. And you expect this guys to be motivated to fight BH??

Good. Now answer the following question truthfully; did the insurgency started under Jonathan? The corruption in Nigeria military, did it start under Jonathan? And which head of state gave you that notion that if insurgency last 24 the government is involved. Would Jonathan be that daft to destabilize his own government? What will be his benefit in doing so? In Iraq, in Syria, in Afghanistan, in Pakistan, the government of this respective countries have been battling the same kind of Islamic fundamentalist/jihadist for more than a decade now, and still there's no end in sight under different successive governments, does it mean all the government that came and gone has a hand in it? Going by the logic of your former head of state.

Am waiting for answers.
