Pornography is very dangerous to you and your brain as a student. In post on the effects of pornography on a student's brain, we started this important discussion by explaining some of the views of Dr. Ken Katas as regards the subject. Here in this article, the discussion continues as the importance of making youths understand the dangers of pornography cannot be overstressed.
One thing about the choices we make in life is that they are rooted in desires. Desires influence decisions. Desires are the reasons for decisions. We make choices because we have certain desires in us. The purer our desires, the purer our decisions. The stronger our desires, the stronger our decisions. The more legitimate our desires, the more legitimate our decisions ought to be, right? But, this is not always so.
Sometimes, our desires fuel from the wrong sources. Legitimate things can sometimes become illegitimate when practiced wrongly. Example, cocaine; it's a legitimate drug administered by medical practitioners for some particular ailments but it becomes illegitimate when the intake is abused. It then becomes an liiegal hard drug.
You need to be aware and live in the consciousness of the fact that you are a sexual being. Don't pretend about it. Recognizing this is the first step in staying out of trouble. Just like food and sleep, our sexuality is another human phenomenon greatly associated with appetite. Just as it's natural to feel hungry and sleepy, it's also natural to feel sexually aroused. It's the way God designed us.
The problem arises when we satisfy our appetites the wrong way. Some feel hungry and eat the wrong things. Over-indulgence is one of our greatest problems today. There is an acute hunger for sexual gratification among many of us today and the world system is making matters worse by a lack of adequate censorship on what is being displayed on the TV and on the Internet.
I love the passage of the Bible in Proverbs 4:23 that says "keep your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life". What is our Creator telling us in essence? He's simply saying that WE HAVE THE POWER TO DECIDE WHAT GOES IN AND THAT WHAT GOES IN DETERMINES WHAT COMES OUT.
Sexually explicit material triggers mirror neurons in the male brain. This is a major problem for male students. These neurons, which are involved with the process for how to mimic a behavior, contain a motor system that correlates to the planning out of a behavior. In the case of pornography, this mirror neuron system triggers the arousal, which leads to sexual tension and a need for an outlet. "The unfortunate reality is that when he acts out (often by masturbating), this leads to hormonal and neurological consequences, which are designed to bind him to the object he is focusing on," says Williams Struthers, a psychologist. "In God's plan, this would be his wife, but for many males it is an image on a screen. Pornography thus enslaves the viewer to an image, hijacking the biological response intended to bond a man to his wife and therefore inevitably loosening that bond."
Perhaps the most troubling impact of pornography on children and young people is its influence
on sexual violence. A wide range of studies on the effects of pornography have been conducted
among young people aged 18 to 25, as well as older populations. Across these, there is consistent and reliable evidence that exposure to pornography is related to male sexual aggression against women (Flood & Hamilton, 2003a).
In men, there are five primary chemicals involved in sexual arousal and response. The one that likely plays the most significant role in pornography addiction is dopamine. Dopamine plays a major role in the brain system that is responsible for reward-driven learning. Every type of reward that has been studied increases the level of dopamine transmission in the brain, and a variety of addictive drugs, including stimulants such as cocaine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, act directly on the dopamine system. Dopamine surges when a person is exposed to novel stimuli, particularly if it is sexual, or when a stimuli is more arousing than anticipated. Because erotic imagery triggers more dopamine than sex with a familiar partner, exposure to pornography leads to "arousal addiction" and teaches the brain to prefer the image and become less satisfied with real-life sexual partners.
Overstimulation of the reward circuitry—such as occurs with repeated dopamine spikes related to viewing pornography—creates desensitization. As Gary Wilson explains, "When dopamine receptors drop after too much stimulation, the brain doesn't respond as much, and we feel less reward from pleasure. That drives us to search even harder for feelings of satisfaction—for example, by seeking out more extreme sexual stimuli, longer porn sessions, or more frequent porn viewing—thus further numbing the brain.
"The psychological, behavioral, and emotional habits that form our sexual character will be based on the decisions we make," says Struthers. "Whenever the sequence of arousal and response is activated, it forms a neurological memory that will influence future processing and response to sexual cues. As this pathway becomes activated and traveled, it becomes a preferred route—a mental journey—that is regularly trod. The consequences of this are far-reaching."
What makes Internet porn unique? Wilson identifies a number of reasons, including: (1) Internet porn offers extreme novelty; (2) Unlike food and drugs, there are almost no physical limitations to Internet porn consumption; (3) With Internet porn one can escalate both with more novel "partners" and by viewing new and unusual genres; (4) Unlike drugs and food, Internet porn doesn't eventually activate the brain's natural aversion system; and (5) The age users start watching porn. A young person's brain is at its peak of dopamine production and neuroplasticity, making it highly vulnerable to addiction and rewiring. This addiction is very deadly as it plunges the young person into an unending hunger and desire for sexual gratification.
As an ending note, I must say from experience that it is very possible to break away from addiction to pornography. It's just about making use of the power God has given to us. The power of choice. We have been created with the ability to choose. When you know that a path only leads to future regrets, why would you choose it. Pornography is a powerful force that has become increasingly widespread in Western culture since the advent of the Internet. As the culture has been “pornified,” the ways in which men, women, and sexual attitudes and expectations have been affected are of considerable concern.
Even though pornography may seem to have come to stay, it doesn't change the fact that is is not morally wrong and will only cause damage to patronizers. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PATH, SAY NO TO PORNOGRAPHY AND YES TO A HEALTHY MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT. And, never say it is difficult because it's not. JUST SAY 'EN' 'OH' - NO. That's all it takes. If God, your Creator says you can, then you can make your choice and it will stand.
