The police have mounted surveillance cameras known as the Police Closed Circuit Television at strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The cameras were mounted on top of high rising buildings within the metropolis.

The cameras have already been spotted near the International Conference Centre located at the Central Business District and the Transcrop Hilton Hotel.

All vehicles driving into Abuja from the Airport Road and those driving out of the city are now being monitored through the cameras.

Telemobile is the company handling the project.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Haz Iwendi, who confirmed the installation of the cameras, said that there was nothing sacrosanct about them.

He said, ”Surveillance cameras are used in all cities of the world to monitor crimes. Even in Britain, they have it. It is a close circuit to monitor crime.”

He said that the cameras were not targeted at anyone but to monitor crimes.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that the monitors were at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, where the top hierarchy of the police force work.

Last week the Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Broderick Bozimo, inspected the monitors at the Force Headquarters.

During the inspection, Bozimo said that the cameras were also being installed at strategic locations in Lagos.

He said that when all the cameras had been installed, President Olusegun Obasanjo would inaugurate them.

Bozimo said that Abuja and Lagos were being used as pilot schemes after which the cameras would be installed in all cities.

According to him, the facility would boost police efficiency and effectiveness in combating crimes.

He urged the force to train its officers who would man the facility and to make sure that adequate maintenance was given to it.

Let's hope robbers won't steal all those cameras like they vandalise the bridges and other public facilities.

I wonder which cctvs they plan to install to prevent the looting of the national treasury.

Well, Otumopko can be planted at all strategic places. If anybody steals from the national treasury again, Ogun and shango will do their work.  cool

If the surveillance cameras are only found on high-rise buildings facing down in the zoom mode, then they were obviously put there to peer down into the cleavages of passing women and record those findings for posterity.

Dude! That was a joke. U shd get a sense of humour. I hear you can now buy one on ebay.

Talking about women not being a part of the security issue, about 36 hrs ago or so, a branch of Diamond Bank was raided for 4hrs! Some of the gang members were female. These days, when it comes to crime in 9ja, gender is no longer a big issue.

To Original Question : I think it's both an invasion of privacy and a good thing. Disadvantage and Advantage.

I do not view it as an invasion of privacy. It is out in a public area so what invasion of privacy could there possibly be when other members of the public are most likely always present at that location anyways.

Only people who have things to hide would complain about it.
