The newly-redeployed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Oyo State, Ambassador Rufus Akeju, has assumed duty at the headquarters of the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Nigerian Tribune gathered that a quiet ceremony where Alhaji Nasir Ayilara, the immediate past REC, handed over to Akeju, was held at the INEC office, Agodi, Ibadan, on Tuesday. The Public Relations Officer of INEC in the state, Mr Ayodele Folami, confirmed to newsmen that Akeju reported for duty on Tuesday and would be back fully after the New Year holiday.

But Akeju’s assumption of duty was greeted with another protest from representatives of four political parties- Labour Party, Accord, Peoples Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party-who reiterated their call for his removal. The representatives of the parties, under the aegis of Concerned Inter-Party Stakeholders, on Wednesday, marched peacefully to the INEC office as they did on Monday.

The leader of the group, Alhaji Isiaka Kehinde, while addressing newsmen, said protest against Akeju would not stop until his boss, Professor Attahiru Jega, removed him from Oyo State.

He warned against plunging the state into another episode of the infamous Wild, Wild West, through the decision of INEC to post “a controversial and biased umpire” to oversee elections in the state.

“Two courts of competent jurisdiction have adjudged Akeju as unfit to conduct election in Osun State. On this ground, he was asked to step aside to ensure transparency in the August 9 governorship election in Osun.

“Why must Jega give us a controversial REC who had been allegedly linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and also said to be a close ally of a leader of the party?,” Isiaka queried.

He disclosed that market women, artisans and other stakeholders who are advocates of credible elections in the state in February would not hesitate to march nakedly against Akeju if not removed.

Meanwhile, Accord Party has described the development as a ploy by Professor Attahiru Jega to ensure the “clear and visible victory of Accord” is thwarted and upturned.

Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr Nureni Adeniran, in a statement on Wednesday, said “under a free, fair and credible election, Accord will win the February elections convincingly because our victory is very glaring.

“We don’t want the election to be supervised by a biased umpire and this is why we joined others to say ‘No’ to Akeju. Why has he always been posted to an APC-controlled state if not for some hidden agenda?

“We are not saying he should not retain his job as REC. He should be taken to the INEC headquarters in Abuja or any other state not being controlled by APC.

“We don’t want a situation where an incumbent will have a partner in an institution that should be neutral. The outcome of election conducted in such a situation will not be credible.

“In Law, if a judge is perceived to have a link however little with any of the parties in a matter, such judge either disqualifies himself or the chief judge will re-assign the matter to another impartial judge for fair hearing. Jega should take a cue from this,” Adeniran said.
