maybe you are either dumb or deceitful . in sane societies GMB will be in jail for all atrocities he did 30years ago as head of state

There should be a total restructuring of the nation's civil service as per employer-employee relations. While the government can't be absolved of insensitivity, these countless unions too are always asking for more and more. Today NMA, tomorrow JOHESU, next tomorrow PENGASSEN, next week NLC. This man's only made the news because of his profession, there a lot of people kicking the buckets everyday.

It's about time the minimum wage is reviewed upwardly for all civil servants in Nigeria and not just greedy groups holding us hostage with their selfish and often times, unrealistic requests. I have a relative whom was being cared for at the Teaching Hospital but whose health has deteriorated because of this strike.

Both the government and these guys should get their shit together and end the ego-flexing already.

I really don't want to sound insensitive or smth. But when the medical doctors were on strike and people were dying, they did make insensitive statements. Like 'doctors are the only important members of the health team' 'if johesu goes on strike, they won't be missed because doctors are on ground' 'they know a little of lab tech, nursing, pharmacy' bla bla bla.

Foolish set of Homo sapiens, why couldn't you save what was left of our only neuropathologist? I thought you were 'demigods' and have mystical powers to save lives? Why blame his death on JOHESU now? The joke is on you and the GEJ led FG that has no value for human lives.

The moment we begin to understand that healthcare is collaborative like it is in saner climes, is the moment we'll begin to treat each health profession on its own. Prof's death(tho sad) is a reminder to that effect. Don't quote me pls!

Someone has to be used to teach. Would you want a dr who has only read the books to treat/ operate on you or someone who has done it on 1000 other people.

The question you should ask yourself us did this experienced dr fall from heaven with those skills.

Well, I know of another neuropathologist in Nigeria, Professor Anjorin.
Baba as he is fondly called, retired in Unilorin, and presently in Lautech.
Re: JOHESU Strike Claims Nigeria’s Only Neuropathologist by nas00(m): 5:22pm On Jan 07, 2015
It is very unfortunate that some cynics are trying to play politics with a sad occurence here: "JOHESU strike claims Nigeria's only neuropathologist".
To what end? For JOHESU folks to collect their 2-cent-each increase in renumeration, and have other requests granted, only for them to find out their country is not there to help them out when they one day suffer a cardiac/ cardiopulmonary emergency?

The way I see it, JOHESU strike or no JOHESU strike, there are certain conditions that the nation's health system is not adequately equipped to handle effectively. One of such is cardiac/ cardiopulmunoary events which often present as emergencies, as in this case, and if nothing definitive is done within a short time frame, the patient invariably dies!

Whether you like it or not, in our present day nigeria where non-communicable conditions like hypertension, diabetes, obesity are on the rise, there will certainly be a corresponding rise in the incidence of complications, such as stroke, visual impairment, cardio- respiratory insufficiency (eventually leading to cardio-pulmonary arrest), pulmonary thrombosis-embolism, kidney failure, amongst others.

The question is: Is the Nigerian government aware of these possibilities, and has the health ministry (via support from the FG, State govt and LGAs) made adequate and evenly distributed provision of necessary EQUIPMENT, TRAINED MEDICAL PERSONNEL & ESSENTIAL DRUGS needed to manage various possible emergencies? My friends, the answer is NO.

In case our thieving leaders don't know. If any of them, say a very prominent politician in Nigeria, suffers a cardiac or cardiopulmonary emergency, with all his/ her private jets, the truth is that he/ she will die within minutes to, at most, a couple of hours. Meaning before he/ she reaches their usual USA, Great Britain, Germany, India or wherever, where they go for medical tourism, the deed is already done. That is why we must stop this default Nigerian mentality of embezzling public funds, once in positions of power. We should channel the nation's resources towards establishing a health system that is solid by all standards and accessible to all Nigerians, whether poor, average or rich by socio-economic standing.

In saner climes like the USA, emergency centres are distributed in states such that any American in need of emergency, after placing a phone call, is picked by an ambulance as fast as possible and transported to the nearest emergency centre. This usually takes 5-10 minutes, because there is always a dedicated traffic lane reserved for ambulances and the police exclusively, unlike in Nigeria where the first obstacle you encounter is lawless traffic. Most Nigerian emergencies never make it to the hospital, anyway. No thanks to our poorly laid down traffic regulations.
The emergency centres should be adequately equipped and staffed. I once observed that an emergency centre in the USA had snake anti-venin available, in apparent anticipation of a snake bite event. I recalled a patient who died due to snake bite in the emergency unit of a major teaching hospital in Nigeria some years back, with JOHESU and the doctors working at full capacity, but no snake anti-venin to treat the patient. Snake bites are commoner in the tropics where we are, so there is no reason a responsible health system should not have snake anti-venin available in our very few emergency centres in Nigeria. You can only work within the limits of resources at you disposal.

The snake anti venin is just an example. Cardio-pulmonary emergencies require even better-organized and EVER READY emergency care. Certain essential drugs, defibrillators, trained interventional radiologists/ cardiologists/ pulmonologists, cardio-pulmonary catheterization labs etc are needed in rapid, systematic sequence to manage successfully. The good thing is that these days, people no longer necessarily die of strokes and cardiac events in the western world...and even in India, a developing country like Nigeria...but corruption is the bane of Nigeria, and yes, these conditions still kill people like flies in Nigeria. We could have it better.

So, rather than say JOHESU strike claimed this noble Professor, I would rather the country wasted the finest it had to offer in Professor E.E.U. Akang. Rather than using this as a blackmail tool, it should be a wake-up call to every sane Nigerian and our leaders. There is a lot of rot needing to be sanitized in health care delivery all over Nigeria.

Shame on those trying to score cheap points for a certain JOHESU strike, citing this sad event. And for anybody that insists JOHESU strike claimed him, may YOU or YOUR RELATIVES develop a cardiac/ cardio-respiratory emergency when JOHESU and the doctors are working full-fledged, so that JOHESU can save you. Nonsense.

We are talking of a moribund health system, courtesy of chronic corruption and neglect!

May the gentle soul of the departed rest in peace.

Amen.

I wonder what will become of those can't afford a private hospital, and even those who can afford it most private hospitals have very few nurses and attendants that are always overwhelmed by the number of patients in the various wards.

And you might strike the cord well to tell which of the health professions want the same accord with medical doctors. Do you even know the root of the JOHESU strike?

That CMD position should be left opened to any health profession is a crime? More so, doctors still the head of clinical decisions.

An upgrade of CONHESS is a crime? While maintaining the relativity that has always been? Preach to me pls!

There is no ground on which lab scientists or pharmacists should ever be CMDs. That should never happen. What will be the basis of that? How much experience do they have outside their own specific field? How would they be able to make sound decisions that will improve the state of things in the teaching hospitals? If you guys argue that health managers should be employed to manage the hospitals, I will agree to that. Apart from that, any other suggestion is utter crap.
Teaching hospitals were built with the sole aim of training specialist doctors and medical students. That is the major difference between them and FMCs. Yet your people want govt to stop the main people involved in these trainings - honorary consultants. Then they should as well ask that the teaching hospitals should all be converted to FMCs. You guys should simply allow the status quo be maintained.
All health workers are already adequately remunerated considering our country's economy. There is no ground for all those beef against doctors. Let me also remind you that all over the world, pharmacists are higher placed than lab scientists, radiographers and the rest. Meanwhile they've all teamed up with you, and you guys don't know you're belittling your revered profession by that useless gang up. I pity for you guys.
