Nigerian military allegedly killed many Boko Haram insurgents during the January 5 fight for Bama, but still failed to reclaim the Borno State town.
Sahara Reporters informs with reference to a military source that the troops and the militants had been indulged in “a heavy gun battle”, which resulted in the death of numerous terrorists.
Soldiers together with members of the civilian Joint Task Force gathered in Kawuri, located close to Bama, to launch the fight for the strategic town. However the insurgents were reportedly well-armed and also killed many Nigerian soldiers and civilians.
One of the local vigilantes who was among those trying to return Bama said:
“Yesterday they [militants] were many at Kawuri village. So many of them were killed after hours of gun battles, but we were advised to withdraw. Nigerian troops left to go to Konduga and our boys are back to Maiduguri.”
A military source at the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army also commented on the situation:
“Yes, we made an attempt to reclaim the town but the operation was not successful. We dealt with them [Boko Haram fighters]. Many of them were killed and wounded. We are still working hard and will take back Bama from the militants.”
