POOR SERVICE: NATCOMS Renews Call For N750b Compensation by JurassicPark: 10:33am On Jan 08, 2015
[b]Following the very poor quality of service experienced by subscribers during the yuletide, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has renewed its call for telecom operators to compensate telecom subscribers with the sum of N750 billion for the poor quality of service they have suffered over the years.

President, NATCOMS, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo disclosed this yesterday, in a telephone conversation with Daily Independent.

According to him, this amounts to between seven and eight thousand naira per subscriber.

Chief Ogunbanjo noted that findings carried out by NATCOMS show that between N1.5 and N1.6trillion have been lost to poor Quality of Service (QoS) in 2014 alone.

He noted that it was injustice on the part of the subscribers to suffer this infraction and when the regulator fines the operators for poor QoS the subscribers do not benefit at all.

The NATCOMS boss noted that it was ironic that the subscribers on whose behalf the regulator imposes fines on the operator will be the ones still to pay for the fines in the form of added cost of telecoms services.

He noted that this was the major reason why NATCOMS took the operators to court and joined the NCC in the suit. The next hearing of the case he maintained has been adjourned till February 9, 2015, at the federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Chief Ogunbanjo admitted that while 70 per cent of poor QoS was caused by the operators, 25 per cent was caused by other factors which were not the fault of the operators. Such extraneous factors include; power outages from public power supply, theft of diesel, cable cuts, base station closure by government agencies and rural communities among others.

It could be recalled that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently directed all telecommunications companies to come up with a compensation plan for consumers of telecommunications services on their network before the end of December, 2014.
