Now if you ask me, this is what I call grassroot politics in Nigeria and I won't be surprised if GEJ wins at the end.

ABUJA- AHEAD of next month’s Presidential and general elections, the Presidential Campaign Organisation yesterday brought its elected and appointed Councillors from the local Government Councils to Abuja and recruited them into ensuring that the party’s candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan wins the election.

As part of moves to actualise this and win the elections at the grassroots, the PDP Campaign Organisation yesterday launched the “Operation Deliver Your Ward”

The over 4,000 councillors who had already been split into six groups according to their geo-political zones, would be co-ordinated by the director, contact and mobilisation of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Professor Jerry Gana.

At the PDP National Councillors’ Forum conference for the North Central zone yesterday, the party described councillors as political foot soldiers and true grassroots mobilisers, just as it urged them to market the good product of the party, rather than waste their time in insulting the people.

Launching the Operation Deliver Your Ward, Deputy Director General of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Professor Tunde Adeniran stressed that the need to use the councillors for the mobilisation of the people was because they occupy the most strategic position among politically elected people, adding that they are at the grassroots and what happens depends on them.

Prof. Adeniran who represented the Director General of the campaign organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, urged the Councillors to work‎ as if the elections werecfor tomorrow, adding, “when you go out as ambassadors you are the eyes of the president and the PDP. We know that you are very strategic, we know that you are very influential and we know that you are very popular among the people.

“We are launching you to win your units, win your wards, win your friends and relations and then translate that to your local government area.”

Earlier in his remarks, Director, Contact and Mobilisation, PDP campaign organisation and former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana who explained that the objective was to mobilise and train the councillors as PDP mobilisation agents.

Gana who noted that they would serve as image makers of the party, pleaded with them to avoid the use of abusive language, but to present President Goodluck Jonathan as good product who has delivered on his campaign promises, adding, “the objectives of this engagement is to mobilise and train councillors to become effective mobilisers of votes for our candidates at all levels. You are the local image makers of Mr. President.”

He listed the achievements of the president in the area of respect to human rights‎, infrastructure development, agriculture, education, water resources, health and the power sector, adding, “Don’t waste your time abusing people, don’t waste your time creating trouble, you have a good product to sell. You are very powerful people because you are closer to the grassroots.”

Also speaking, the grand patron of PDP Councillors’ Conference and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Engr. Muhammed Abba-Gana who noted that that PDP councillors account for nearly 70 per cent of all councillors in Nigeria, comprising 6,521 members, described PDP as truly grassroots based political party, and called on the councillors to promote the party’s candidates on social media.
