1. Eradication of Guinea Worm Disease. Guinea worm disease, an infection that previously
affected over 800,000 Nigerians yearly has now been TOTALLY ERADICATED.

2. No New Polio Infections. For the first time in history, Nigeria has spent more than a year
without recording a new polio infection. Polio is now almost eradicated with only 6 existing
cases left from 388 in 2009.

3. Containment and Eradication of Ebola. 8 weeks after Patrick Sawyer brought the Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) to Nigeria from Liberia, the disease was effectively contained. Nigeria’s effective
management of EVD has been hailed by many experts as “world class”.

4. 100% Increase in Immunization Coverage. National Immunization Coverage has increased to
82% from 38% in 2012.

5. 40% Reduction in Infant Mortality. Under-5 mortality rate down to 94/1000 live births from
157/1000.

6. 50% Reduction in Maternal Deaths. Maternal death during child bearing down by 50% over the
past 4 years

7. Open Heart Surgeries Resume in Nigeria. 10 years after losing the capacity to perform open
heart surgery, several Centers of Excellence with the capacity for cardio thoracic surgery have
been revived in Teaching Hospitals across the country. Since March 2013, over 50 successful
procedures have been performed by these centers. Nigerians spent $300m for open heart
surgeries in India in 2010 alone.

8. Curriculum for Training Paramedics Introduced. For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a
standard curriculum has been introduced to for training and certifying Paramedics in tertiary
institutions across the country. This will increase the supply of skilled paramedics in Nigeria -
improving pre-hospital care for trauma patients and reducing preventable deaths.

9. Nationwide Restoration of Primary Healthcare Centers: Over 1,500 Primary Healthcare Centers
have been refurbished and supplied with essential drugs under President Jonathan

10. Frontline Health Workers for the Underserved. 11,300 Frontline health workers were recruited
in 2013 alone – deployed to rural and underserved communities to deliver primary healthcare
services.

But Health workers are on strike. Is that an achievement?
