Good morning, I went through this post and comments and saw a lot of insightful comments. I am a graduate of Botany and about to go for my masters in Pharmacognosy, thinking of either University of Lagos or University of Ibadan. Any ideas of which of the school to pick from? Also, more ideas on the course, Pharmacognosy. Thanks. 1 Like |

Hi all.. Let's talk about the specialties and career opportunities in botany...This plant science field is so broad and there are many specialization... Botanist interested in ecology study interaction of plants with other organisms and the environment, . other filed botanists search to find new species or perform experiments to discover how plant grow under different condition. Some botanist study the structure of plants, they may work in the field, concentrating on the pattern of the whole plant. Others use microscope to study the most detailed fine structure of individual cells..Many botanist conduct experiments to determine how plant convert simple chemical compounds into more complex chemicals...They also study how genetic information in DNA controls plant development and the process that occur on a time scale ranging from fractions of a second in individual cell to those that unfold over eons of the evolutionary time The results of botanical research increase and improve our supply of medicine, foods, fibre, building materials and other plant products.. *Conservationist use botanical knowledge to help manage parks, forest, rangelands and wilderness area *Public health and environmental protection professionals depend on their understanding of plant science to help solve solution problems. So one of the most significant aspects of botany is the number of different specialties and career opportunities from which one can choose...(phycology, mycology, ecology, systematics, paleobotany, palynology, taxonomy, biotechnology, pathology, horticulture, physiology to molecular biology-DNA barcording)... Among careers available to a person who enjoys the outdoors are positioned as an ecologist , taxonomist, cconservation 100lvl student from the department of botany, any advise pls on how relevant the course is especially in Nigeria today...what are the job opportunities available aside from teaching 1 Like 1 Share |

Hello All, I'm sorry for going AWOL,. It hasn't been easy but God gat our back.. I'd continue to answer questions concerning botany and its related issues(other fields, research areas and job opportunities).. Feel free to ask your questions.. Thanks.. |

@zainabtomisin All I can advise is.. Do your best , come out with a good grade. Don't be daunted by tough botany courses you will face,.. You're still in 100level to be asking for opportunities in botany. But with a good grade, you will get your route... |
Re: For All Students Who Studied Botany Or Any Other Plant Related Field by ProfOjah1234: 10:38pm On Jul 11, 2017 |
AnibabaQuadri:Wow! Plant breeding, That's a nice specialisation.. I won't lie to you, I only did few courses (like 2) in plant breeding and propagation because in Unilag, only students with lower cgpa (3.4 and below) specialises in that area (Pure botany).. But students in Environmental and Ethno can borrow a course or two from them.. So I rarely know much about plant breeding... Congratulations on your MSc |

OllieO:Hello OllieO Hope this reply isn't coming too late.. Studying pharmacognosy is nice and those schools you mentioned above are nice.. But I can only say much about Unilag, Their cognosy dept is wow and you'd really enjoy it.. I have 2friends that graduated from there and I also have current student who will be done soon .. |
