It's Hollywood, most of the actors that play teens are usually not teens. Ralph Macchio was famously in his late 20s when he did Karate Kid III. The guy who played Hannah Montana's brother was way older than everybody thought - in season 1 he was a 29 year old man playing a 16 year old boy! I know it has something to do with work laws that restrict minors from working long hours.

I wasnt really expecting the main character to end up with the popular guy, but I guess they did have a lot in common since they've known each other for a long time. However, a bookish type dating a popular sportsperson? It happens I guess, but generally, a socialite like the guy would have been the pairing.
