Entrance Scholarships

If you have been admitted to Carleton with an admissions average of 80 percent or better, you will automatically be considered for a renewable entrance scholarship at the time of admission. You may be offered a renewable entrance scholarship provided you are entering Carleton for the first time and have no previous attendance at post secondary educational institutions. To be considered for an entrance scholarship, the University’s Admissions Services must receive your complete application for admission and all required grades (either directly or through the Ontario Universities Application Centre) by June 15. Entrance scholarship offers are not assessed or reassessed on final high school grades.

Eligibility

Geographic Scope
The Foundation accepts applications from nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.

The Foundation only accepts applications of eligible nationals listed above who are residing in one of the countries where there are local Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) offices which process applications and interview candidates.

Age Limit
Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.

Selection Criteria

The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) consistently excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study and 4) relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas. Candidates are also evaluated on demonstrating thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Financial Assistance

The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the ISP must be considered a lender of last resort. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Master Grants for students from developing countries.

Deadline and decision

There are different procedures according to what kind of applicant you are. The procedures are explained below.

The selection date is the 28th of May 2015. Results will be communicated in the first week of june 2015.

Important information: every student needs to have academic admission before he/she can apply for the Master Grants. Detailed information below sorted by category.
About the Master Grants

Each year, a maximum of 10 scholarships can be awarded.

The master scholarships are awarded for the duration of the studies, aiming at the delivery of a Ghent University diploma after max. 2 years of study. The scholarship is paid for the total duration of the studies.

In case of a 2-year study programme, the 2nd year will be paid upon successful completion of 60 credits.

The scholarship fee consists of:

Allowance of €1000 per month.
One-time only installation fee of €500
Insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)
Yearly reimbursement of the tuition fee with a maximum of €105

Warning: in case of increased tuition fee for the master’s programme, Ghent University will only reimburse the refundable part. Fees vary according to the programme and can be up to €8000 e.g. certain Erasmus Mundus programmes.

Airline ticket and visa costs are not included in the grant.

Selection Committee

The Committee for Development Cooperation makes a selection of the applications based on the recommendations obtained from a working group of this Committee.

The Committee then proceeds to formulate well-founded recommendations to the Executive Committee of Ghent University.
Selection criteria

The recommendations are based on:

The qualifications of the applicant for the master grant (this also implies that the chances of overly qualified candidates might increase).
Students who successfully follow the first year of a Master Grant programme at Ghent University may have a higher chance of selection.
There is no strict age limit, altough applicants below 40 years are preferred.
The significance of the master’s programme for the student’s country.
Validation of the knowledge in the student’s country.
The student’s nationality (see nationality).
The motivation of the applicant.
IMPORTANT selection criterium: Proof of relation with UGent: Demonstrate that the university of your studies, your current or future employer has a relation with Ghent University (former or current). For example: staff exchange, research projects, publications, etc.

For Ghent University it’s important that for this type of grants, the student will return to his/her home country upon their study and add to the UGent international network in developing countries. Therefore as a prerequisite we ask that you can demonstrate that the university of your studies, your current or your future employer already has a former or current relation with UGent. It’s an asset if this is in the field of your study, but if there’s already collaboration in another field, that’s also good.

In view of the extremely high number of Master Grant applications we normally receive, your application will not be eligible if there’s no relation at all. It’s up to the applicant to add documents or letters that support this institutional link.

ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowships

Fellowship Details

Award: Amount will depend on the number of collaborators and the duration of the research leaves but will not exceed $200,000 for any one project.
Tenure: up to a total tenure period of 24 months, to be initiated between July 1, 2015 and September 1, 2017
Completed applications from all collaborators must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 pm Eastern Daylight Time, September 24, 2014.
Notifications will be sent by early February 2015.

Objectives

The aim of this fellowship program is to offer small teams of two or more scholars the opportunity to collaborate intensively on a single, substantive project. The fellowship supports projects that produce a tangible research product (such as joint print or web publications) for which two or more collaborators will take credit.

The fellowships are for a total period of up to 24 months, to be initiated between July 1, 2015 and September 1, 2017, and provide up to $60,000 in salary replacement for each collaborator as well as up to $20,000 in collaboration funds (which may be used for such purposes as travel, materials, or research assistance). The amount of the ACLS fellowship for any collaborative project will vary depending on the number of collaborators and the duration of the research leave, but will not exceed $200,000 for any one project. Collaborations need not be interdisciplinary or inter-institutional. Applicants at the same institution, however, must demonstrate why local funding is insufficient to support the project. Collaborations that involve the participation of assistant and associate faculty members are particularly encouraged. Up to eight awards will be made in the 2014-15 competition.
Eligibility

A collaborative project is constituted of at least two scholars who are each seeking salary-replacement stipends for six to twelve continuous months of supported research leave to pursue full-time collaborative research during the fellowship tenure.

The Project Coordinator must have an appointment at a U.S.-based institution of higher education; other project members may be at institutions outside the United States or may be independent scholars.
All project collaborators must hold a PhD degree or its equivalent in publications and professional experience at the time of application.

Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowships

Ryskamp Fellowships are intended to support an academic year of research (nine months), plus an additional summer’s research (two months) if justified. Fellows have three years from July 1, 2015 to use the fellowship funds, and considerable flexibility in structuring their research time: the nine-month period may be taken as one continuous leave, or divided into two single-semester leaves; the two months of summer research may be taken before, after, or between the semesters of the year’s leave. Fellows are encouraged to spend substantial periods of their leaves in residential interdisciplinary centers, research libraries, or other scholarly archives in the United States or abroad.

(1) If personal circumstances preclude extended absence from their home campuses, applicants need to demonstrate that they will be released from all academic and administrative responsibilities, and that continual residence at home will successfully advance their projects in other ways—through access to particular colleagues, for example, or to valuable research collections.

ACLS will award up to 12 Ryskamp Fellowships in the 2014-15 competition. Each fellowship carries a stipend of $64,000, a fund of $2,500 for research and travel, and an additional 2/9 of the stipend ($14,222) for one summer’s support, if justified by a persuasive case.
Eligibility

The Ryskamp Fellowship Program is open to tenure-track assistant professors and untenured associate professors who:

by September 24, 2014 will have successfully completed their institution’s last reappointment review before tenure review, (2) and
whose tenure review will not be complete before February 1, 2015.

Applicants must hold the PhD (or equivalent) and be employed in tenure-track positions (3) at degree-granting academic institutions in the United States, remaining so for the duration of the fellowship. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is not required, and previous supported research leaves do not affect eligibility for the Ryskamp Fellowship.
Application Requirements:

Applications must be submitted online and must include:

Completed application form
Proposal (no more than 10 pages, double spaced, in Times New Roman 11-point font)
Bibliography (no more than two pages)
Publications list (no more than two pages)
Three reference letters including one from a tenured faculty member in the applicant’s department.

United Nations Journalism Fellowships

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2015 fellowship program. The application deadline is March 16, 2015.

The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The fellowships will begin in early September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

The fellowship program is open to journalists who are native to one of the developing countries in Africa, Asia (including Pacific Island countries), Latin America and the Caribbean, and are currently working full-time for a bona fide media organization in a developing nation. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences. They must also have approval from their media organizations to spend up to two months in New York to report from the United Nations.

In an effort to rotate recipient countries, the Fund will not consider journalist applications for 2015 from nations selected in 2014: Nigeria, Tunisia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Journalists from these countries may apply in 2016.

Four journalists are selected each year after a review of all applications. The journalists who are awarded fellowships are given the incomparable opportunity to observe international diplomatic deliberations at the United Nations, to make professional contacts that will serve them for years to come, to interact with seasoned journalists from around the world, and to gain a broader perspective and understanding of matters of global concern. Many past fellows have risen to prominence in their professions and countries. The program is not intended to provide basic skills training to journalists, as all participants are media professionals.

The main objective of the Quota Scheme is to contribute to capacity building through education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return. The Quota Scheme is also intended to strengthen relations between Norway and the selected countries and thus contribute to internationalisation at Norwegian institutions of higher education. Most universities and university colleges in Norway participate in the Quota scheme. The institutions involved are allocated a certain number of students under the programme each year. The scheme normally includes courses at Master’s and Ph.D. level in addition to certain professional/Bachelor’s degrees. Most of the Norwegian institutions offer courses and educational programmes in English.
Recruitment enrollment

The Quota Scheme will only enrol students from institutions (organisations, universities, authorities) which have collaboration agreements with Norwegian universities or university colleges. Norwegian institutions usually do not admit free movers (individual applicants) to this scheme. Only in very special cases will free movers be considered. Please contact the institutions directly for individual information.Students who come to Norway as self-financing students will, as a rule, not be considered as being qualified for the Quota Scheme. To find out which institutions collaborate with Norwegian institutions, please refer to the websites of the Norwegian institutions. You could also ask your home institution about whether they have any sort of collaboration with Norwegian universities / university colleges from the list of participating institutions.
Basic general requirements

As a student, you must apply directly from your home country.Students usually apply for degree programmes that serve as a continuation of their studies in their home country or for courses which can be a joint part of a degree programme in their home country (joint degree or sandwich programmes). Most of the programmes offered are at Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programmes. All candidates should typically have the following basic qualifications:

Secondary school certificates
Minimum two years of higher education from their home country
Some exceptions apply for certain professional educational courses at Bachelor’s level
