I recently met a Muslim cleric who dyed his beards to wine colour. I was forced to ask him why he did that and he said his religion permits that. But am still confused on what could be the possible reasons for this?

Its allowed Islamically to dye your hair to any colour except black.

Muslims are not allowed to dye their hair unless they use henna. The dye should never be be the NATURAL hair color.
They do it because Mo is rumored to have done it and of course they rewrite history and pretend to know about Abraham better than the Jews,and they claim he too dyed his.

It's one of those silly religious stuff with little meaning but I have heard it was a means of hiding gray/white hair to court younger women with ease

Abu Dawood (a hadith narrator) reported from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah who said: “Abu Quhaafah (a very old man) was brought on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, and his head and beard were like thughaamah (a plant whose leaves and flowers are intensely white) because they were so white. The Messenger of Allaah (saw) said: ‘Change this white hair, but avoid black.’” (Reported by Muslim, al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah).

It is permitted to dye the hair with henna or any other substance that will give it a reddish or yellowish colour, because it is reported that the Prophet (saw) used to dye his hair with yellow. Muslim reported that Abu Bakr dyed his hair with henna and katam and that ‘Umar used to dye his hair with henna. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said, “The best things with which you can change this grey hair are henna and katam.”

So dyeing the grey and white hairs is a 'sunnah' in Islam, especially when it is excessive. This means that doing it is a source of reward for following the exhortation of the prophet (saw) to do it. Abu Qahafa mentioned above, to whom the exhortation was first directed, was a very old man at the time, and his white hair was excessive. Any colour may be used, but not black. This is likely so as to avoid any hint of deceit, ie by pretending to be younger than one actually is. When the dyed hair is of different colour, the fact that it is dyed is obvious.

Actually, in Islam, following any command or obeying any prohibition, while its reasoning may not be immedeately obvious, always leads to our submission to the Will of God. At the very least, we believe that we are rewarded for our obedience to him. We also trust that all He commands us is beneficial to us, though our limited comprehension may not always encompass the reason behind it.

I thought you might want a muslim perspective on it.
