Ten registered political parties on Thursday insisted that the February 14 presidential and National Assembly elections must hold.

They said that the calls for the postponement of the elections were the handiwork of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, which they said, was going to be defeated at the polls.

In a statement released in Abuja, they said they would not support calls for the shift of the elections.

Those who signed the statement, which was read by the National Chairman of the PDM, Bashir Ibrahim, were APA National Secretary, Samaila Umar Sifawa; National Chairman of KOWA, Alh. Umar Mustapha; National Chairman of MPPP, Mr. Olu Falade and the National Secretary of the SDP, Dr. Sadiq Umar Gombe.

Others were the Presidential candidate of the ADC, Mani Ibranim Ahmad; National Chairman of HDP, Ambrose Owuru; National Chairman of DPP, Mr. Gashon Benson; Presidential Candidate of UPP, Chekwas Okorie and the National Chairman of Accord Party, Alhaji Mohammed Lawal Nalado.

Under the coalition of Progressives Political Parties, the group said that the call for the shifting of the elections was meant to plunge the country into chaos.

The statement read, “We the undersigned, on behalf of our political parties, are shocked at the conduct of some of our colleagues who have joined the infamous campaign to scuttle Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy by calling for the postponement of the general elections barely a week before its commencement.

“We condemn, in the strongest terms possible, this underhand and undemocratic tactic meant to plunge our country into anarchy, on top of the debilitating state of insecurity which has become pervasive in the land.

“The call for the postponement of the general elections has nothing to do with the preparedness of Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the election or the pace of distribution and collection of Permanent Voters Card.

“INEC, the authority empowered by law to fix the date of the election had said, countless times, it is ready and prepared to conduct a free, fair and credible elections on February 14th and 28th.

“As a matter of fact, Prof. Attahiru Jega, Chairman of INEC and his colleagues in the Commission had stated time and time again, that they had four years to prepare for the election and they will deliver better election this time around.”

Besides, he said that the military, led by the Chief of Defence Staff, had guaranteed adequate security on land and air for a successful and safe conduct of the 2015 general elections.
