Jonathan's Campaign Billboard Burnt In Abuja After Poll Shift by nigerianewsbeat(m): 8:17am On Feb 09, 2015
A campaign billboard of the Peoples Democratic Party bearing the photograph of President Goodluck Jonathan was set ablaze in the early hours of Saturday by an unidentified man.

The incident was said to have taken place following earlier rumours that the Independent National Electoral Commission had postponed the February 14, 2015 Presidential election.

The billboard is located on the ever-busy Suleija-Kaduna Expressway at the Federal Housing junction, beside the office of the National Emergency Management Agency in Kubwa.

On it was boldly written, “On February 14, vote Goodluck, vote PDP…The Goodluck Thumb.”

THE PUNCH learnt that the arsonist drove to the billboard, parked his car, brought out a tyre and set it on fire.

But the arsonist, according to officials of NEMA, who pleaded anonymity, came back in the night and on seeing that the fire didn’t do much damage poured petrol on another tyre and set it ablaze.

It was not however clear who was responsible and what prompted it.

But a taxi driver within the vicinity, who simply identified himself as Yahaya, said, “The incident happened following earlier rumours that the February 14 presidential election has been postponed.”

Our correspondent saw ashes of the burnt billboard during a visit to the site on Sunday.

Some youths had recently pelted the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan in Katsina and Bauchi states and burnt his campaign vehicles in Jos.

The Nigeria Posterity Project had expressed concern over the use of stones and destruction of campaign posters belonging to Jonathan by some northern youths.

According to the organisation, northern leaders should tone down their utterances and allow free campaigns by all candidates in all parts of the country.

The National Coordinator of the NPP, Mr. Louis Ebodaghe, had said, “The burning of President Jonathan’s campaign vehicles in parts of the North and the pulling down of his posters in parts of the North can only be likened to Nazi Germany where, for the fear of Hitler, everybody must fly the Nazi flag even against their conscience. This cannot be tolerated in modern day Nigeria and should not be encouraged.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress in Cross River has disclosed plans to embark on a One- Million Youth March in the state to reiterate support for the party’s presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), despite the poll shift.

The party condemned the postponement of the general elections earlier scheduled for February 14 and 28, saying it was obvious that the leadership of the PDP was afraid of impending defeat at the polls.

Speaking on behalf of the party after a crucial meeting on Sunday, the state APC Youth Leader, Mr. Effiom Otu, said the youth wing of the party would organise a one-million youth march in solidarity with the APC presidential candidate and other APC candidates to garner support for the party ahead of the elections.

Otu also said the youths had endorsed a door-to-door campaign for the party, adding that the objective was to educate and sensitise the electorate in order for them to be convinced.

He said the campaign would ensure that all the 2,283 polling units in the state were aggressively covered in the exercise.

Otu said, “We will organise a one-million youth march in the state capital soon in solidarity with our presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and other candidates to garner more support for the party ahead of the elections.

“We (the youths) have endorsed a door-to-door campaign for the party in the state. The objective is to ensure that those who hold suspicious view about the person and capacity of the party candidates for the election are educated and sensitised to jettison their held conviction.”

He castigated the Presidency for using insecurity as a reason for the polls shift, explaining that there was no strength in the argument advanced for the postponement.

Otu said, “The Presidency was caught in another web of cajoling by feigning insecurity as the reason for the postponement because it could not convincingly pull through the issue of PVCs collection as initial reason for the shift.

NDYM Gets New President, Vows to Retaliate Attacks on Jonathan

09 Feb 2015
Following last year’s gruesome murder of the President of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM), Ajulisan Akumagba, a new national president has emerged for the movement. He is Mr. Godwin Ikogho.

Ikogho is a former President of the Isoko National Youth Movement, one of the ethnic nationalities’ youth groups in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
The new president was unanimously adopted and endorsed by the National Executive Council of the NDYM in a well-attended convention to fill the vacuum created by the death of Akumagba and to complete the tenure slot of Delta State.

According to a resolution signed by the NDYM National Legal Adviser and Chairman of the Convention, Barrister Cosmos Akuneho and Secretary, Ojubuiyi Bright, and made available to THISDAY, the office of the Director General of the Directorate for State Security, intervened and brokered peace for all the parties.

It read in part: “The national President of the NDYM, Ajulisan Akumagba was brutally assassinated on March 2, 2014 by yet unknown persons”
“Consequent upon the unanimous resolution endorsed by NDYM at the office of the DG, SSS, Abuja on March 24, 2011 and March 24, 2013 respectively, the NEC of NDYM today, having adopted the letter from the Delta State chapter replacing Akumagba with Mr. Godwin Ikogho as a National Officer hereby nominate, confirm and adopt Mr. Godwin Ikogho from the same Delta State as the national President of NDYM who will complete the remaining tenure of Delta State.”

“In line with the above therefore, the federal and state governments, ministries, parastatals, multinationals and agencies, including security agencies and the general public should take note that Mr. Godwin Ikogho is now the President of NDYM.”

The convention passed a vote of confidence on the present board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), under the leadership of Bassey Dan-Abia, as Managing Director, even as it urged the National Assembly to make haste to pass its 2015 budget to enable it perform better.

It however urged youths of the region to support the Ikogho-led administration of NDYM to enable it move the prganisation to the next level and carter for the needs of the teeming youths of the region.

In another development, the NDYM has thrown its full weight behind the second term bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

National President of the Movement, comrade Godwin Ikogho made the disclosure while addressing newsmen in Abuja weekend.
Ikogho frowned at the attack on the president’s campaign team in some parts of the country and warned that youths of the region have the capacity to “return fire.”
“The entire nation and all groups in the Niger Delta region, in the interest of peace and unity are hereby enjoined to support the second tenure aspiration of Mr. President for him to consolidate on the transformation agenda of his administration.”
“It shall no longer be accepted by NDYM for any person or group of persons to pelt Mr. President in any part of Nigeria, in his course of campaigning, in preparation for the presidential election. The civility of the Niger Delta youths should never be misconstrued as a sign of weakness or docility,” he fumed.

God forbid, what happens if, in the midst of the Boko Haram war, skirmishes break out in Bakassi and on our border with Benin Republic? Will the service chiefs say they cannot attend to those because they already have a war going on in the North East?

The clueless president deserves more than that, Jonathan has finally lost a vote in me.
I used to be a staunch GEJ supporter, but not until he shifted the election, scared nigga.
The mugu has delayed our victory party in Abia as we were preparing to vote out PDP and vote in APGA.
I am an Igbo guy, but An Hausa man had better rule us than a clueless coward.

Now, I humbly join the APCites in shouting #saiBuhari

That is very bad. Such an individual can kill too. Politics is not a do or die game. Let's learn to respect others views too. Everyone cannot just be like you or support your candidate(s).

God bless President GEJ. Politics should not be a do or die game. That we don't support one candidate should not make us enemy.
