I never said he shouldn't buy a BMW, and I never said anything about Japanese cars either. I only advice the op to buy a newer model if he has the money. It is true that German luxury cars lose their value when they get old and can be difficult to maintain. Would I buy a 3 year old BMW x6? YES without blinking. Would I buy a 13 year old BMW x5? CAPITAL NO. However i can buy it as a second car but not as an only car. Those cars ate enjoyed when new, owners sell them off when parts start failing.

Let's all not lie to ourselves. BMWs are expensive to maintain whether u follow the manufavturer's procedure or not. Even in the USA where they have specialists, only the rich buy them and they buy them new.
well, it's okay as you said...but if it were my choice to buy the 2002 x5, i'd gladly do and not fret over reliability. I'll buy one that's sound and well taken care of. I wouldn't go for one that's been abused...there are the 2002 BMWs still in great condition. The life of a vehicle depends on how much maintenance was carried out on it.
my colleague who imported a 2003 Toyota Highlander from the U.S. last year May, has his A/C compressor penned for replacement...repair speculated at N60,000 for the whole system, yet my 1993 3 series compressor, which has been running in the car,OEM, was changed at the turn of the year...
the cost of the 2002 BMW m54 unit compressor (same engine found in the 2002 3.0l x5) is just N16,000-N17,000 here in Port Harcourt.
the maintenance of the car is within the modesty of affordability. My mechanic uses it, Op if you need to know more, call this number and find out all you need to know about the car 08033101058.

lungwun how many cars do you have? Is the bemmer your 1 and only work horse?

Op don't buy the car if it is your one and only car it is an expensive car to maintain, parts are expensive, mechanics are expensive, mechanics are hard to find.

Yes, the BMW is my one and only workhorse. Day in day out, approximately used 40 miles a day for my commute and other associated movement.

Next question?

That BMW X5 is one car that has been abandoned in the museum the last X5 I saw was the re-modeled one recent year that normal X5 he don tey wey I see am for road, the last one I saw (the old shape) was dented like mad I won't say run but if you are buying because its cheap, you may pay the balance in other forms you won't like.

@ op, do not heed this advise. There are other older versions of the X5 that have been well maintained by those who truly understands and values their Bimmers.

For the fact that you've seen one or two in bad shape doesn't mean that they are all like that.

@ op, is this your first time of considering buying a Bimmer? Welcome to the club if it is. I was once like you. Before I bought my Bimmer though, I made a lot of inquiries from those who already owned Bimmers. What is the current condition of the X5 you wanna purchase? Do you know the owner personally? I don't know your location but you can request someone who knows more about Bimmers to accompany you to inspect the condition of the X5.

QX4 started in 1997-1999 with 3.3L V6 steel engine, mid-cycle refresh in 2000-2002 3.5L V6 aluminium engine, ended production in 2003. Theres no such thing as. Infiniti Qx4 special edition. Qx4 is Qx4 and all are base trim.

@ thread, i can't comment because i wasn't invited.

Bye.

Bro, you don't need to be invited here to comment. We are all one family here, remember?

If you eventually go for the X5, you can get the contacts of reliable mechanics in your location by asking from other Bimmer owners in your location. I did same couple of times before settling for 2 reliable mechanics.

Bro, thanks for your input. Yes, its my first Bimmer. The ride is toks brought in late last year. The seller also agreed to taking it for auto scan centre before I make payment. Am in lagos. Will check around for a good bimmer mech. Alternatively there's also a 2003 E300 Benz in the same price range with the Bimmer. What do you think?

@OP, yhur locatiion determines whether yhur X5 will be good for daily driving. A 4.4 ltr V8 engine is not expected to be fuel efficient cept yhurs is the underpowered 3.2 ltr i6. The X5 is a great car to drive buh doesn't tolerate heavy traffic driving. The engine is affordable, buh accessories come expensive. The people I know who own x5s have other daily drivers. As a first car, I honestly wouldn't recommend. As an extra far, no problems.

I must be old! I don't remember it being cool to spell 'Your' as 'Yhur'.

Crikey! But has even been morphed to 'Buh' undecided

Hi All, I Own the BMW X5 E53 3.0i which i got with 100k + Miles on it and I Can Tell You After Owning A Honda Accord (Baby Boy) and A Lexus RX300, I can Testify that BMW is not just the Ultimate Driving Machine For Performance and Comfort, But Also that the X5 is a Very Satisfying Machine. The Car was Particularly Put through the Harshest conditions as it was Just Parked without Warming or anything for 2YEARS in America as I was Supposed to Use it there on A Planned Trip but I Had to stay Back to resolve certain Personal Issues. My Friend who The Car was With Had his Own Cars and was always On the Move. Leaving the Car untouched did affect a Few Basic things (The Water Pump and A Few Minor Components) but since i fixed them and Have Been Using the Car for almost 2YEARS in Lagos and Having Traveled with it to Abeokuta Several Times, Iseyin, Ibadan, Osun State, and a Lot of Waka Within Lagos, All I Have Had to do is Change Oil and Filters every 3Months and Car still Works and Sounds as Good as New. I Have The Best BMW Mechanic In Ladipo as My Mechanic Though But he Hasn't Had to Do Anything Major ever. The X5 3.0i is to me 1 of the Best SUVs ever Made and I will Never Trade it for the Japanese Mediocre. The 4.6 and 4.8s do Have a Lot of Major Issues Based On Reviews and all (though they are Better Performers) but the straight 6 3.0i is A Fantastic Machine. The BENz ML s of same Generation Can't even Compare Based on Reviews which You Can Easily find On The Tube. Let Nobody Advice You Wrongly. I still Own and Drive Mine. Feel Free to Call for a Test drive to Understand and see things for Your self.

Hi all. Please I am considering buying this sweet BMW X5. However I'd love to know what are the likely issues I may have with the ride. I noticed that most top range SUVs are not as expensive as I'd imagined compared to the camrys and other japs and a friend says the prices are low because they usually have parts and maintence issues. Please advice.

I drove the BMW x5 2005 3.0 for 2 years, I also drove the BMW x5 4.4i for about 16months. So my advice is based on personal experience. Not hearsay.

If you are buying the 2002 x5, avoid the v8, it shares the same engine with the landrover and that makes the engine very expensive and there is also this reliability issues on that engine. That's, the 3.0 is okay for you!

Personally, I prefer the x5 with the balloon, they last longer and makes the car more drivable on bad roads. The balloon is not expensive (25k both rare legs) so relax! Well, you may consider the one with the spring being a starter. The rare shocks is just 10k for both legs.

There's no electrical issues to worry about.

The x5 is cheaper than the ML, RX and MDX in maintenance. The parts are available at Ojekunle, Ladipo markets.

Give it a try.
