Why Is General Obasanjo Suggesting A Coup At This Time? By Iyke Nwambie by Positivist: 5:58pm On Feb 12, 2015

General Obasanjo's penchant for inciting the public against any leader that fails to dance to the drumbeat of his song has become part and parcel of the Nigerian legend. He sees nothing wrong in going to Kenya to talk about the possibility of a military coup in Nigeria, he delights in engaging in sundry anti-party activities that he would never have tolerated from anyone, he got infuriated when the sitting President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan referred to his mannerisms as being akin to those of a motor park tout instead of being those of an African statesman that he wished it could be, he holds everyone to some kind of ransom, a ransom I describe as the ransom of 'perennial relevance.'

It is INTERESTING to note that most former Presidents in more advanced democracies carry themselves with more dignity that ends up making them relevant to the political issues of their day. Take for example, when former President George W Bush was asked to give an opinion on his immediate successor, President Barrack Obama, the former president declined to do that with this reason: "It is not good for the country." What does that say to us? It shows us that a former leader must avoid utterances that could heat up the polity unnecessarily.

The INTERESTINGthing in al of these melodrama of relevance is that General Obasanjo is the one person who has zero tolerance to any form of public criticism. If you dare to tell him anything that seems untoward to him, he cuts you to size immediately regardless of how correct or wrong your views might be. A pastor in Jos once wanted to remind him of something important during his tenure as president, and he responded this way, "Pastor, my foot!" Pastor Bakare once came up with his prophetic tirades that were aimed at warning him (Obasanjo) and here was his response: "I have my own prophets too." When he noticed the slightest semblance of opposition to his views and intentions from his erstwhile benefactor, General Ibrahim Babangida, he described him as "a fool at seventy" on his seventieth birthday, when his former boss, General Gowon tried to give him some mild counsel, he took him to the CLEANERS using his aides, when his former vice-president, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku tried to remind him of why his tacit support for a third term in office was a bad signal for Nigerian's nascent democracy, he described him as being "disloyal."

Obasanjo's penchant for those that would massage his political ego is second to none. Take for instance, in his most recent book titled, "My Watch" he gave a candid reason why he did not endorse a candidate like the former Governor of Cross Rivers state, Mr Donald Duke who many felt was better prepared to take up bigger leadership responsibilities when he zeroed down his choices to the South-South region of the country, he said: "...Donald Duke is too independent-minded...we never agreed on several things..." This answer in itself tells us what major qualification you must have if you want to be in General Obasanjo's good books.

It was conducts of this nature that led the late General Abacha to weave a phantom coup on him. Fortunately or unfortunately that act worked out for him because it eventually led to his second missionary journey in the corridors of power. But what did General Obasanjo do when he was asked to immortalize Chief M.K.O Abiola with a national honor of any kind, General Obasanjo maintained his position that "Abiola was not the Messiah Nigeria needed" by shunning every form of positive gesture towards the legacy of the man on whose narrative he became a palliative candidate.

So, while we listen to this General who loves to see his face as the "logo" of the Nigerian nation, we must shout him down when he calls either by verbal insinuation or innuendos for a military coup like he just did in Kenya, we must tell him to go and enjoy his many booties and bounties in Ota farm and stop meddling with issues that he created ab initio. General Obasanjo must not allow his personal crave for political relevance to degenerate to the point of suggesting a coup either expressly or implicitly. That in itself is the height of political absurdity. May God bless Nigeria.
