Who Should Emerge Nigerian President in 2015?

Many Nigerians consider party affiliation in their choice of whom to vote to steer the wheel of governance in Nigeria. However, this is definitely not enough. While it may be true that birds of a feather flock together, however, let it be noted also that party affiliations have little to play for the ineptitude or character of a person who assumes a leadership position. This explains why we see some party members decamp even to the opposition parties after being elected into office. The mass Exodus of staunch PDP members into APC and vice versa is not new to us.

Therefore, it is about time Nigerians looked inwards, to the personality of the individual they want to vote for. Here are a few qualities we should look out for in whom to vote for as Nigerian president in 2015.

Competence
The challenges facing Nigeria of today have really grown beyond what our founding fathers envisaged. The country is now bedevilled by growing problems of insecurity due to the nefarious activities of boko haram, cankerworms of corruption, high levels of illiteracy and unemployment, epileptic power supply, bad roads, deficient infrastructure, poor healthcare and a host of other contending issues that were absent a few decades ago. Consequently, the country needs a competent leader who is pragmatic in solving issues.

It will be difficult for the country to record much progress if Nigerians continue to vote for leaders based on religion, ethnicity, sentiments or party affiliations. The time for change is now!

Consequently, the next Nigerian President should be a competent individual with proven track record of excellence and great antecedents from past leadership positions or public office positions. It shouldn't matter if he is from the North, South, East or Western part of Nigeria. His seriousness and patriotism should count more!

De-tribalism
At this critical time which the country needs emergency intervention to overcome her challenges, it will be disastrous for Nigerians to choose their President in 2015 solely on tribalism. Nigerians cannot shy away from the current divisions created in the country along tribal, ethnic and religious lines. Favoring a particular ethnic group, major or minor, or a person based on their particular religious inclination to lead the country, with little or no regard for competence and passion to move the country forward, will further plunge the country into chaos, or disintegration as already "prophesied" in some quarters. God forbid!

Although the next President will emerge from a particular ethnic group or tribe in the country, such individual must see Nigeria as his home and not just his place of origin. What Nigeria really needs is a resourceful but de-tribalized Nigerian who will hold the mantle of leadership and use it to better the lots of the Nigerian people collectively and not just his tribe or locality.

Nigerians should choose the right individual who can foster unity and national cohesion and will fight for the integrity and sovereignty of the country. We can judge from their antecedents-- indeed by their fruits Nigerians already know them!

Accountability
One of the virtues of a good leader is sheer accountability to his people. Since 1960 till date, unfortunately Nigeria has been ruled by thoughtless leaders and their cronies who easily forget that power belongs to the people. The masses deserve allegiance and respect from their leaders rather than tyranny, lukewarm attitude or oppression. It is a pity that since Independence, only a few leaders ever declared their personal asset or show a form of accountability to the people. Yet, they flagrantly lavish our common wealth and siphon funds by siting white elephant projects.

In the forthcoming general elections, Nigerians must stand up and vote a President who will listen to them, hold the mantle of leadership in a way that depicts love, concern and respect for the common man on the street. Nigeria is in dire need of a surgical operation. We need an honest messiah who is ready to be accountable to his people and render periodic account of his stewardship to Nigerians.

In conclusion, as the 2015 general elections draw near, let us all assess the qualities of those candidates aspiring to lead us and are competing to win our votes. On the basis of Competence, De-tribalism and Accountability, we should separate the wheat from the chaff. We shouldn't throw away our votes but vote our conscience instead. We are all a living witness to the rising level of insecurity, unemployment and poverty despite our common wealth. Widespread corruption and other societal evils are troubling our dear nation at an alarming rate. Nigerians should get it right in 2015 lest we nail our collective destiny as a country.

A great piece. Unfortunately, as it was observed in the write-up, as well as judging by the comments above, Nigerians are to steeped in partisanship to make objective decisions. And that, rather than leadership failure, is our Number 1 problem.
