Media is already a washed with rising cases of Chinese companies ill-treatment of Nigerian employees. The situation is gradually degenerating with little or no intervention from the rightful authorities. From Chinese construction firms to telecom companies and manufacturing companies, the situation is the same. Rising cases of internal disputes unmanaged has lead to physical abuses with casualties from both sides, most times these disputes instead of an an amicable solution being employed have been rather complicated by police intervention.
It is becoming very necessary that concrete action must be undertaken to intervene in the rising profile of these feuding parties. The recurring issues normally range from poor working benefits associated with high risk activities, poor salaries, poor working environment, owing contractors and in extreme cases physical abuses of employees.
While acknowledging the rising influx of Chinese foreign direct investment in the Nigerian economy and the resultant positive effects in employment generation the need to establish sound policies to protect the rights of Nigerian employees should never be undermined. The gains of foreign direct investment should not only be defined in terms of foreign exchange gains but must also reflect the overall satisfaction of Nigerian employees working in these foreign firms.
Labour unions must step up their roles in pressing forward the demands of the Nigerian worker irrespective of their background whether from the civil service or the private sector, Nigerians are the same everywhere. Both countries must demonstrate practical concern in resolving this situation which has the potential of affecting diplomatic relations.
