Striker Gbolahan Salami has made a dramatic return to Warri Wolves, days before the Nigeria Professional Football League is scheduled to start.

The 23-year-old moved to Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade on a six-month loan in January but has surprisingly made a return to the Wolves less than two months into his loan deal.

Wolves spokesman Moses Etu told Goal that the striker could no longer cope with the dire financial straits of the Serbian side and opted to return to his fruitful hunting grounds in Warri.

Last season, Salami scored 17 goals in the NPFL as he helped Wolves earn a continental ticket.

“Salami has chosen to return home because the Serbian club is facing financial problems and he could not continue playing without pay,” Etu told Goal.

“He will be a part of our team for the new season and there is still space for him in our Confederation Cup campaign.

“Salami is an experienced player whose services will be very useful to our club like he did in the past.”

Even though Wolves have not fully determined his status, he is expected in Warri by the weekend to fight for his place among a group of young strikers hired by the club in the off-season.

They would hope that the famous bad boy of Nigerian football, who recently married his heartthrob Lolade Opeloyeru, reenacts his scoring form in time for the new NPFL campaign.http://m.goal.com/s/en-ng
