Two soldiers were killed on Wednesday, March 4, as Boko Haram militants planted and remotely detonated a bomb near the southeastern Niger town of Diffa.
According to Niger military sources, they went after two insurgents responsible for the attack and killed them, Leadership reports.
Niger’s army spokesman, Col. Ledru Mustapha said: “We had two soldiers killed yesterday in a remote-controlled explosion. We took up the chase and killed the two militants responsible for the attack near a bridge over the Kamadougou River.”
This is the first time Niger’s army has reported being attacked with a remote-controlled bomb since it launched a campaign with Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria this year against the Islamist sect.
