The Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Labour have adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as their candidate for the March 28 presidential election.
The AD’s decision was made at the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Lagos yesterday.
AD national chairman, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, said with the adoption of Jonathan, the party’s machinery and structures across the country would now be made available to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate to achieve his re-election.
“Our decision to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan did not come easy. We had to critically compare his record with that of General Buhari and we can affirm that Jonathan has demonstrated, beyond any reasonable doubt, that he is a true democrat,” Akinfenwa said.
The AD also announced the suspension of its former National Secretary, Rafiu Salau, for alleged anti-party activities.
The party said Salau was expelled after the NEC executives voted for his expulsion (41 votes for and two against), having found him culpable of
gross misconduct, anti-party activities and unruly behaviour towards the chairman of the party, among others.
Similarly, the national executive council of the Labour Party met in Ibadan, Oyo State yesterday to adopt President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s flag bearer.
The party however opposed usage of card readers for the general elections saying the country is not ready for the technology now.
“During the Osun and Ekiti elections, Prof. Jega categorically stated that the card reader cannot be used for very sensitive elections like that of Osun and Ekiti” the Labour Party said.
“In our own view of election sensitivity, the presidential election is more sensitive and crucial that we cannot do anything capable of causing confusion, hence it should not be used,” it added.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the party’s NEC read by its National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkabir Salam, the party said: “Going by the youthful age that is the majority in the country, General Muhammadu Buhari, the APC flag bearer is too old to rule the country, hence the Labour Party has adopted the candidature of President Jonathan.”
While supporting the deployment of military personnel during the general elections, the party maintained that it would provide security at the polls since the country is in a state of war, considering the security challenges facing the nation.
