The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians. Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism. The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project. Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.” The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered. Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation. He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.” The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in his remarks at the event said that the Rivers State Government had been facing a decline in support from the Federal Government owing to the political differences between him and President Goodluck Jonathan. Amaechi, who was represented at the occasion by a former governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria in Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), wondered why Jonathan would chose to make the state suffer, despite his campaign of transformation. He said recent documentaries against a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu , would not affect the performance of the party at the polls, urging those peddling lies about the APC to desist from it. The first Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Mobolaji Johnson (retd.) commended the leadership legacies of Jakande, saying he laid a solid foundation for development in Lagos State. The author of the book, Olaosebikan, said he was motivated to write about Jakande in 1994 after he met the former governor. Mistake? I beg to disagree cuz mallam buhari knew exactly what he was doing truncating people based projects in the south but allowing those phallic white elephant projects in the north full government support even going as far as jailing,torturing and systematically killing off these fine proponents of development in the south (such fine breed/generation of politicians and innovators Nigeria will never see again) and allowing their illiterate barkin zuwo northern counterparts the freedom to roam the world with loot or highest -house arrest-...then terming the whole charade as War against Indiscipline.... gaddem him. 2 Likes |

Anyone can google it and those who are old enough will tell us the truth. The Lagos metro rail line was designed by the Jakande government to facilitate transportation within Lagos and surroundings but was terminated when Buhari military regime took over in December, I983. Buhari, while speaking in Lagos on Wednesday at the presentation of his party manifesto, said when he got into power, the relatively stable economy, which was handed over to the government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari, had been badly plundered and corruption was rife in every sector. He added that the rail line project was meant to cost N100m, which was a large sum of money then, and the Federal Government was asked to guarantee the loan meant for the project. He said, “Then, we didn’t know how much debt was on us as a nation and we felt that we should not add another N100m to it. I had to set up two committees to assess how much we owed and we promised not to take more loans or to devalue the naira but to develop the economy.” Buhari argued that tagging him an enemy of Lagos State because he cancelled that project was mischievous and unfair, stating that the first one billion naira he spent when he was heading Petroleum Trust Fund was on Victoria Island and Ikoyi waterworks in Lagos. Earlier, in Ikoyi, while meeting with the youth Buhari told them it was important to vote wisely as their choice will affect their generations more than his. His running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare, who presented the party manifesto, said God raised Buhari for Nigeria. Bakare said that within the first 100 days in office, Nigerians would begin to feel their impact. He said their party symbol was a pen because they would use it to rewrite the history of Nigeria and that after their tenure, there would be no more military intervention in Nigeria forever. “We will begin by initiating action with the legislature so that true federalism can be entrenched in Nigeria at all levels. We call our country Federal Republic of Nigeria but we are neither a federation nor a republic. We have a lopsided government where everything reflects round the centre but we will push for true federalism in which we will have strong local governments, strong states and strong Federal Government. We will address our crippling economy by bringing in the best brains both at home and abroad. For too long, we have left politics and governance to the clueless but we want to attract the best and brightest to our government.” Bakare also said they would be working with the legislature to expunge the immunity clause that shields the public officers from prosecution. On issues of security, Bakare said that they would be have both state and community policing system with laws put in place to prevent their abuse by power drunk tyrants.
