It all starts from the way we see ourselves. We all see ourselves differently. An Igbo person sees himself first as a Nigerian before seeing himself as an Igbo but the Yoruba person sees himself first as a Yoruba person, a South Westerner before as a Nigerian. This identity goes a long way to explain why you see the Igbos, in the spirit of one Nigeria, willing to travel to other regions of Nigeria to settle and establish themselves in and are not afraid to live anywhere in Nigeria, same for Hausas too. However, the Yorubas, of all 3 major Nigerian ethinc groups, are the least travelled to other regions of Nigeria.

Corrected.

Nope. In the south east, there are way more hausas than yorubas who are only a handful. Hausas are all over Nigeria and, at least, are well known for the tasty suya which they are masters in. What are the Yorubas outside SW known for? At least the Igbos are known for their commerce and trade all over Nigeria. There might be more Yorubas in the North than in the South East but by means of numbers, Hausas are more travelled than the Yorubas, who are to be found mostly in SW, with a handful in other regions, with the Igbos leading the pack.

Yet they do not dominate the taxi driving trade in regions outside SW right?

The Hausas dominate in Suya wherever they are. Why? Their population outside their region makes sure this.

The Igbos lead in commerce and trade wherever they are, often taking over some markets in their entirety. Why? Their population outside their region ensures this.

However, do the Yorubas dominate in the taxi business wherever they are? If no, then they are not many of them outside their region afterall that ensures their dominance in that trade.

The Nigerian pride is having the Nigerian spirit of oneness in you, the openness to other cultures, the willingness to relocate and live amongst other cultures different from yours without fear in the spirit of brotherliness, the willingness to learn other Nigerian languages, the willingness not to see your tribal identity as first but being able to relate with other tribes on an equal level without putting your tribal issues first. Need I say more?

Where would you rate Yorubas going by this definition?

Good it may interest you to know that most 'hausa' seen in the west are from Niger republic.

I am currently in Kano, and i know a typical Hausa mentality they dont travel outside northern Nigeria.

I am quite sure you have passed through the NYSC scheme, have you ever wondered why northerners are rarely posted to the south and if they do they relocate immediately to the northern?

Have you ever wondered why a typical Hausa man would ignore a fellow Nigerian abroad for a sudanese?

Truth be told, let us tell ourselves the truth: the academics issue you talked about is no more. Since the last few years, JAMB statistics have contiually showed the most JAMB applicants (those attempting to go to school) as from South East zone. In WAEC, the best performers in recent times have come from the South East and South South zones, save for Lagos state which is multi-ethnic in its composition with its performance largely attributed to non south westerners. The state with the highest professors isn't even Ekiti state to start with. There might have been a period the south west led in academics, say after the civil war and about 10 years after but ever since then they no longer lead.

Ogun state might have the highest number of private universities, that still does not make the south west as leading in academics. You can have all universities in Nigeria located in SW but yet with SW indigenes making up only 30% of overall attendance in those universities. We need to deal with numbers to establish that fact. Now, every university in Nigeria is given a certain quota of admissions to be given each year, for example 3000 admits, 3,225 etc, based on the university's carrying capacity and how prolific its academic curriculum is, and Federal Universities in Nigeria often have higher quotas than private universities, which implies that private universities admit generally a lesser number of students than federal universities (UNN, UI, UNIZIK, UNILAG, OAU, ABU, FUTO, UNIBEN etc) because Federal Universities often have a more diverse range of courses that they offer than private universities.

Now coming to numbers, in the south west zone, a considerable number of students in virtually most universities in SW are from the south east, and in the south east zone, an overwhelming 90% of students or more is from the same south east zone. These estimates given are representative of what JAMB statistics tell us - that students from south east zone are leading in number of applicants to universities in Nigeria. All over SE and in the North, you would not find students of SW origin contesting the natives in considerable number of students studying in universities in those areas as you would have students of SE doing the same in SW and the North. Students of SW origin tend to be concentrated mostly in the SW, where students of SE origin compete favourably in numbers with them and are still the majority in SE. JAMB and WAEC statistics confirm the demographcs.

As it stands now, south west no longer leads in academics, at least not in the population of students going to school. The SE zone has considerably closed on that gap created during and after the civil war.

I guess you are not well-travelled to see things for yourself. Go to Owerri, the Hausas have a thriving community in Owerri known as Ama Awusa (Hausa community in Igbo) located along Douglas road. That community has been there since over 30 years, specializing in several trades such as tailoring, suya business, currency exchange, and what have you. However, you can count the number of Yorubas you will find in Owerri. You hardly encounter them on the streets of Owerri except the few that are itinerant traders walking around selling yoruba herbal concoctions. Along Enugu-PH expressway, inside Abia state lies another THRIVING Hausa community too. In Onitsha and Enugu, you find the same thing. Hausas have established communities all over South East. The same cannot be said of Yorubas, except the few notable ones in Onitsha.

There is no gainsaying the fact that Yorubas are the least travelled in Nigeria. An average hausa man would easily reel of his fingertips without much difficulty several tribes we have in Nigeria but the average Yoruba man in SW barely knows beyond Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba and thinks that any tribe not Yoruba or Hausa is 'omo ibo', due to their tendency not to travel round Nigeria.

Being from Kogi state is irrelevant to the discourse at hand. There are thousands of Kogites of Yoruba origin and you might be one of them, which explains the angle you are arguing from.

The Council honoured them during its Nigeria National Committee 51st Annual General Meeting held in Owerri, Imo State on Thursday.

Oginni scored Grade 1 in all her eight subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

By the feat, the Osogbo, Osun State-born lad has become the current holder of WAEC’s national distinction/merit award. The Council instituted the award in 1984 to encourage academic excellence.

Oginni, who attended Our Lady and St. Francis Catholic College, Isale-aro, Osogbo, with examination number 4303013/087, also had Grade 1 in Economics, Government, Literature-in-English, Biology, Christian Religious Knowledge and Yoruba Language. She has a cumulative score of 653.9318.

In order to recognise and encourage students who did very well in its examinations, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, inaugurated a scheme to honour this category of students. Its essence was to celebrate the best students in its examinations. This recognition brought along with scholarship and national honour from the students countries.

However a mild drama has begun to play out regarding who is the best student for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) of May/June 2011. With its entire government machinery, the Ondo State rolled out the drums to recognise and celebrate her own Miss Tolulope Falokun, a former student of St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo.

Commissioner for Information, Ondo State, Mr. Kayode Akinmade; Tolu; and Commissioner for Education, Mr. Remi Olatubora, during the state government reception for Tolu

The state government, through her Commissioner for Education, Mrs Remi Olatubora, organised a grand reception for Miss Falokun for scoring A1 in nine subjects. As part of the package, she was offered a scholarship to read law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Like a bolt of lightning out of the sky, WAEC countered the Ondo State position by issuing a statement that Miss Falokun was neither the best candidate in West Africa nor in Nigeria. In fact, WAEC insists that the best students for the country and the sub-region had been announced and honoured at the 60th Annual Council meeting in Abuja on March 27, 2012.

WAEC says it was 17-year-old Miss Christianah Opeyemi Adeloye from Nigeria, and of Charis International College, Abeokuta, Ogun State, who was among the three best students presented at the Council meeting. WAEC publicly bestowed upon 19- year-old Ann Abena Sakyi, 17 year-old Hameed Irbaz (both from Ghana) and Miss Adeloye, first, second and third best students respectively of the May/June 2011 WASSCE.

Meanwhile, Ondo State government is holding on to its claim, as it said, through its Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, that WAEC congratulated the state through a letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and signed by one Mr. Austin Aidokha on behalf of the Head of National Office (HNO) in Nigeria, who described the student’s (Miss Falokun) performance as fantastic and unique, making her the best student in the sub-region and Nigeria in the 2011 WASSCE.

This recognition was conveyed to Ondo State, on behalf of WAEC, by one Midas Global Associates, a company based in Egbeda, Lagos. Midas Global Associates had earlier written to the Ondo State government requesting for the curriculum vitae (CV) of Miss Falokun.

The reason for the request by Midas Global Associates, as explained by an Ondo State government official, was to provide background information on any student that had done extremely well at any of WAEC’s examination. The procedure was normal.

The CV was to complement the profile of the selected student. Midas Global Associates is known to WAEC and could not have written the letter without any form of authorisation.

The facts state that Miss Tolulope Falokun, with examination number 429160/084, recorded A1 in nine subjects – Christian Religious Knowledge, Economics, Government, Literature in English, English Language, Yoruba Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science and Biology – with a total score (T-score) of 742,6992.

On the other hand, Miss Opeyemi Adeloye, who WAEC recognised as the best student in Nigeria and was honoured with the National Distinction/Merit Award at the Abuja ceremony, made A1 in eight – Economics, Geography, English Language, Yoruba Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology and Physics with a T-score of 682,3283. For her feat, Miss Adeloye received a presidential handshake from Vice President Namadi Sambo, who represented his boss, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Her school, Charis International College, was not left out, as it was presented with the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the Benin monarch’s trophy for producing the “the best female candidate in 2011 WASSCE”.

To further complicate issues, WAEC announced that 17-year-old Miss Iyeyinka Omigbodun, a former student of Louisville Girls High School, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, is the second best student under the national category. Miss Omigbodun was said to have got A1 in eight subjects, namely Literature in English, English Language, Yoruba Language, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Chemistry and Physics. Miss Omigbodun had a T-score of 680,9797 with examination number 4280811/075.

The third position, under the national category, went to 18-year-old Miss Kanayo Uduani Nwigbo from Ebonyi State with number 4250418/198 and a T-score of 675,2813. She scored A1 in eight subjects – English Language, Geography, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Most intriguing is that the name of Miss Tolulope Falokun, who scored A1 in nine subjects, never featured in the national category, not to talk of the sub-regional group.

The question being raised here is whether there was a mistake in the collation of the best candidates, as WAEC has not refuted the A1 scores in nine subjects by Miss Falokun, whose performance still stands as the best, whether at the national category or the sub-regional level. Dr. Uyi Uwadiae, Head of the National Office (HNO), after a meeting with some WAEC officials, pledged that the examination body would see to the end of the matter.

Speaking in the same vein, Mr. Yusuf Ari, Deputy Director of Public Affairs of WAEC, said the Council would investigate how Falokun’s school and Ondo State government arrived at the result. According to him, WAEC has time-tested criteria to choose the best students and these were used in honouring the recently announced best candidates in 2011 May/June WASSCE.

He was however silent on the role of Midas Associates. Meanwhile, Ondo State is standing on its position. Responding through her Commissioner for Information, Akinmade, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor,
Mr. Eni Akinsola, they said Miss Falokun’s school and the state government went ahead to honour the candidate based on a letter sent by WAEC through Midas Global Associates.

Akinmade claimed the state government was in possession of the letter from WAEC that showed that Miss Falokun came first not only in Nigeria but also in the sub-region. Akinsola said the document from WAEC was signed by one Mr. Austin Aidokhai, where he stated the criteria used in determining the best candidates.

From all indications, relying on the T-scores given by WAEC, Falokun is the best student in the May/June 2011 WASSCE. Meanwhile, the drama is still unfolding as stakeholders are asking WAEC how Midas Global Associates, located in Egbeda, Lagos, could act on its behalf. Secondly, the public would like WAEC to confirm whether Miss Falokun achieved A1 in nine subjects or not. The answer to this question would put to rest the entire controversy.

It doesn't still explain why Ogun failed to top the best 5 states in the WAEC result of last year but ranked no 18 on the list? Anambra aside, how do you explain Abia, Edo, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Enugu, Ebonyi states all trumping Ekiti state? How can you explain only 33% pass rate (67% failure rate) for the best performing SW state - Ekiti state?

Don't be quick to forget the statistics from last year, Truth be told: top performing states in the last WAEC examination are SE and SS states, save for Lagos that is largely multi-ethnic. A high percentage pass rate for these states mean a higher chance of students from the top 10 states gaining admission into the university than from the second 10 states (you have to pass both WAEC/NECO and JAMB/UTME to gain admission into the university), except they pass NECO or GCE.
