Regrets burning N130m on Uganda friendly

By George Aluo

The Akwa Ibom State Government is ‘waiting’ for the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Mr Pinnick Amaju and the (Super) Eagles to apologise for the disgraceful and lack luster show they put up last Wednesday at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo in the international friendly against Uganda which Nigeria lost by 0-1.
An authoritative source told Daily Sunsports yesterday that the atmosphere in the state box was so charged on Wednesday after the match that you could hear the drop of a pin.

“The governor was so angry that none of us (his aides) could get near him, and to worsen the situation the NFF President stood up and told the Governor “……Even the English team loses in Wembley”, our source disclosed.
We further gathered that members of the state executive council present then descended on the NFF boss berating him for being insensitive to the feeling of the governor who was livid with anger over the shambolic performance of the Eagles.
“ The commissioners and other top government officials were not happy that instead of apologizing to His Excellency and indeed all Nigerians for the disgraceful and lack luster show, he (Pinnick) was talking about England losing at Wembley.”

The Akwa Ibom State Government we further gathered had approved a budget of over 130 million naira for the friendly against Bolivia and when the match could not hold, the state was not disposed to hosting Uganda as an alternative.
Players who were Uyo bound on Monday were made to turn back to Abuja, but at the intervention of the state governor, the match was returned to Uyo.

“His Excellency has a large heart and is crazy about sports, yet he should not be taken for granted. For the amount put in, we do not deserve this shambolic arrangement and shameful display. After Bolivia’s withdrawal, the NFF did not have the courtesy to brief us, the match was moved from Thursday to Wednesday without adequate notice.

At the end, what the NFF brought to Uyo was a hurriedly assembled Uganda local team with only five players on the bench and worse still, an Eagles team that lacked everything only for the NFF President to lack humility and decorum” a visibly angry governor’s aide said Wednesday night.
On the match proper, our source wondered why Eagles coach Dan Amokachi opted not to play Mfon Udoh until the very last minute of the game.
“ When it was evident that we needed to score goals, why did Amokachi leave Mfon Udoh, Nigeria’s most prolific striker on the bench till the 89th minute? At that stage, what was he expecting from him?” he asked.
We gathered that the state Sports Commissioner was summoned yesterday to explain circumstances that led to the poor showing including the empty stands at the stadium and the extent of the financial content given the change in original budget plans.

when your "NEST OF CHAMPIONS BECOME A DEN OF LOSERS"

The match was a bad market for TAN and Akpabio.

I hope NFF return the Eagles to Calabar or Abuja soon
