Big Lessons Northern Nigerians Should Learn From This 2015 Election by humilitypays(m): 5:11am On Apr 01, 2015
In 2011, the present President of Nigeria won the presidential election with a very wide margin with little or no rigging because the whole Nigerians loved him, supported and voted for him nationwide (except in core northern states that voted for Buhari in 2011), and when INEC announced Goodluck as the winner in April 2011, Buhari refused to accept defeat, instead he went on media to condemn the election, accusing PDP of rigging the election and instigating his northern supporters to go on mass protest and killing of innocent Igbo, Yoruba and Niger Delta people living peacefully in the north.

Northerners burnt Igbo peoples' houses, cars, business premises and killed corpers serving the nation in the north just because their preferred northern brother candidate lost an election that was so obvious that he lost.

Now in March 2015, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan an incumbent president who has the whole power of incumbency to manipulate the election to his favour lost to same northern presidential candidate he contested with in 2011, and didn't wait for INEC to officially announce the result of the election before he phoned his challenger, Mohammadu Buhari to congratulate him and peacefully accepted defeat and cautioned his followers not to do any violent thing or cause any national riot, making a history in Nigeria since independence.

This is an incumbent president that has the right to challenge Kano, Kaduna, katsina and other northern states' election results as we learnt via election observers that underaged people voted in those states, yet President Goodluck refused to challenge the election result and peacefully accepted defeat, and also urged his supporters to accept the result and move on for the peaceful existence of Nigeria; thereby telling the whole world and those who care to know that Nigeria's unity, peace, prosperity and democratic progress are bigger than his political ambition and doesn't worth any Nigerian's blood, something northern Nigeria politicians will never do.

Meanwhile, the same Buhari lost clearly in 2011 and instead of him and his northern people to peacefully accept defeat and congratulate Goodluck for Nigeria to peacefully move on, northerners instead decided to go their usual violent way of killing innocent youth corpers from Igbo, Yoruba, and Niger Delta, burning Igbo peoples shops, properties, cars and killing non-northerners living in the north just because a northerner lost presidential election.

But here we are today in March 2015....an incumbent president from the south has lost to a northern candidate in a heated and closely-contested election, and the southern candidate accepted defeat and congratulated the northern winner, and no Igbo, or Niger Delta youth have gone violent to kill or born houses of Hausas living in the south...can northerners learn from this gentleman attitude of the Niger Delta and Igbo supporters in case of future occurrence?

Will northerners learn from the Igbos and Niger Delta from this and embrace peace and stop killing innocent people in any slightest national disagreement?

This is a time for all northern Nigerians to sit down and think and ask themselves these questions:

WHY ARE WE SO VIOLENT and BLOOD-THIRSTY IN THIS NATION?

WHY DO WE ENJOY KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE FROM SOUTH-EAST, SOUTH-SOUTH, & SOUTH-WEST WHENEVER THERE IS LITTLE POLITICAL DISAGREEMENT IN NIGERIA?

This is not just a time for northerners and APC supporters to go on wild jubilation for winning the presidential election, it should be a time of sober reflection for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, all northern politicians and youths on their past mistakes of going violent and killing innocent people from the south whenever there is a slight national political disagreement.

This is a time for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to come out publicly on national media to apologise to all Nigerians, especially those from the South for his past wrong-doings.

This is a time for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to publicly call on his northern brothers and sisters to change and embrace peace in Nigeria no matter the issue in this nation.

This is a time for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to right all his past wrongs and book his name in the good book of Nigeria's history just as President Goodluck has started.

Northerners ought to learn a lot from this because the whole world is watching and God is also watching, and future will tell.

Once again, God bless president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for peacefully accepting defeat and saving many innocent souls that would have been wasted by now!

May God Almighty bless Nigeria and help vindicate the just in this nation.

I agree with your write-up, only to the point where you stated Jonathan was an incumbent who could have manipulated things. The fact is that Jonathan and his cohorts did all he COULD do but was beaten silly by President-elect Buhari. The fact that the same people you are deceptively seeking to credit with maintaining the peace were the same ones that were bombing Iboland during the polls underlines the emptiness of your assertion. Jonathan had no option but to concede and congratulate President-elect Buhari because any other option would have been self-destructive, as he and PEJ have been under the searchlight of the ICC and the international community for some time now.

Abi was it northerners that bombed Enugu & Anambra on Saturday?

Absolute Rubbish!

Did you hear that Jonathan has changed his mind and he and his party are now going to court. Of course, quite characteristic of his entire administration! Confused, indecisive, inept and utter cluelessness. I'm glad we will soon be rid of them

On your rant about the North, without justice, there will be no peace! It's that simple. Who told you the elections were not rigged in the North in 2011? They were hugely rigged around Nigeria and they tried to do that this time but the PVC checked it, thank God!

U r even a stupid coward than any1 can imagine. Can u compare the loss and destruction of then and now? Are u bothered that the end of the election is peaceful so far? The same way Jonathan's supporters didn't anticipate defeat, same way u might not live to tell the story when the trouble u r fermenting burst.
Let's enjoy the moment and look forward to a better 9ja.

The truth is that the northern Hausa/Fulani should try and see us as brothers rather than Muslims in Pakistan and other parts of the world.

For one, they got a white skin but we all have black skins.

They have their own country and lands, we have ours.

They are far away.

We are together.

They have their own resources.

We have ours.

We might not have the same religion but we are the closest neighbours as far as Nigeria and the amalgamation is concerned. I know a few Hausa/Fulani Muslims who see us as one and I hope others follows suit.

God bless us all..

Buhari no doubt won this election. But denying that there was no rigging would be like denying the air you breathe. From daura to otuoke; lagos to Sokoto, cross river to Borno, there was massive manipulation. However, the winners are Nigerians because the tension has eased and apparently, there is peace.

Well, I don't doubt that there were irregularities everywhere, albeit at different scales, but the one in the SS was massive

We saw pictures and videos of result sheets and results announced from all over the country!

Up till now, we still havent seen ONE RESULT SHEET IN ALL OF RIVERS STATE!!

how's that for a puzzle? See my point?

Cheers

Op thanks for this beautiful article.

Well many will not appreciate what president Jonathan has just done to avert crisis in this country. if u ask me, the free, fair and violent free election was not as a result of western power threat on GEJ but the uncommon character of the man to tell the world that he is far honorable than many of the world leaders.

As for the north, they should start leave like humans and stop killing people in order to drive home their point.

American, Britain thought that, there will be crisis if GEJ lose the election. they went and brought ICC advert to come announce punishment for election offenders.
Let this election should tell the world that, the south is far too civilized carry on violent action.

All thanks to our Igbo brothers and sisters for standing for what u believe to be the best choice for Nigeria and not as some may claim.
Goodlock ebele jonathan is the new mandela who had show africa how to play politics of the people.
congrat to GEJ n to the president elect.
