Like her famous husband, Mrs Buhari is equally a self-effacing but extremely articulate and charming woman. She can be described as the softer side of the mirthless and disciplined retired Army general. Here are a few things you probably didnt know about Nigeria’s new First Lady. 1. Childhood Aisha Buhari was born in Adamawa state into the family of the first Minister of Defense, Muhammadu Ribadu in the early 1970’s. She is also the granddaughter of the first Chiroma Of Adamawa. She was schooled in the best of Fulani traditions and cultures . She speaks English and Arabic fluently. 2. Education Aisha Buhari is a thorough professional and an alumnus of the famous Ahmadu Bello university where she earned a Bachelors in Public Administration. Her quest for more education took her into the field of Physiotherapy and Beauty therapy. She is also an alumnus of the famous Carlton Institute of London and the Academy Esthetique Beauty Institute of France, Dubai where she earned a Post graduate diploma in cosmetology and beauty theraphy. She also has a Master’s Degree in International Affairs & Strategic Studies from Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. 3. Family Aisha got married to Buhari in December 1989 and they have been married for twenty five years now.they are blessed with children and a grandchild. She said this about her husband in an interview,“My husband is a family-oriented person. He has very close relationships with his children, grandchild, and entire members of the family. He is very caring and protective of us”. 4. She gained popularity when she asked Jonathan to resign After an assassination attempt on her husband in July 2014 in Kaduna, she said that President Goodluck Jonathan should resign from his office. “As he saw grieving families suffering with the pain of losing their loved ones and the sadness and resentment of the public, he took responsibility as prime Minister; he apologised to his country and resigned because of service to humanity. Jonathan should emulate such a leader, because Nigerians have been dying daily, for the four years, hoping that government is going to do something, but we are tired of this insecurity and increased attacks on innocent people. Where is Jonathan? What is he doing? If action is not taken now, when? It is not enough to verbally condemn; action is long overdue.” She concluded. 5. She is an entrepeneur and employer of labour Aisha is a woman with great entrepreneurial spirit.Following her certification in beauty and permanent makeup , Mrs Buhari was encouraged and supported by her husband to engage in private enterprise where she has since become an employer of labour, a mentor to all aspiring cosmetologists and a consultant to the KRCP/NNPC on skills acquisition. Mrs Buhari is a member of the United Kingdom Vocational Training and Charitable Trust (VTCT), The International Health and Beauty Council (HBC).She is also a board member of International Human Right with their head office in United Kingdom. 6. She plans to perform her role as the wife of the President traditionally She made a statement during the APC women presidential campaign that “When my husband is elected as the president of this country, he will rule the country within the rule of law based on the constitution of the country. If the office of the first lady is constitutionally recognized, he will not tamper with it, but if it is not that’s okay. For me, I will perform my duties and role as the wife of the President of Nigeria traditionally.Wives of presidents have some traditional roles, like receiving guests, visiting orphanages, helping the less privileged people. They also lead in the fight for the right of women and malnourished children, infant mortality rate, kidnapping and girl-child trafficking,” she said. 7. She is a strong advocate for the female gender She never misses an opportunity to advocate for the empowerment of women in even traditionally male circles. With a woman like Aisha Buhari as the First Lady of Nigeria, it is certain that female issues will take the front burner in the Buhari administration.
