The Middle Belt Progressive Forum (MBPF) and the
Concerned Yobe Indigenes (CYI) have separately made
cases for the Senators Mohammed Lawan and George
Akume to emerge as the next Senate President respectively.
Spokesman of the CYI, Baba Sharu told reporters yesterday
in Abuja that the APC should not only zone the Senate
leadership to the North-East, but should also endorse and
support the aspiration of Senator Lawan to emerge the next
Senate President.
“The story of retired General Muhammadu Buhari’s success
at the recent polls cannot be divulged of the same struggle
that Yobe State has also passed through, as despite all
manner of intimidation, it has firmly stood with the
opposition and therefore deserved to be compensated and
carried along this time.
“As a three-time Senator he has shown an uncompromising
stand when it comes to the fight against injustice and his
immense contributions at the National Assembly will go a
long way in enriching the legislature and subsequent
development of the country,” Sharu said.
In a separate development, the National President of MBPF,
Alhaji Hamid Usman told newsmen yesterday in Abuja that
his group welcomed the decision by the APC to zone the
position of the Senate President to the North Central.
“We urge the APC to look at a candidate that will move the
change mantra and domesticate it across the minority
ethnic nationalities in North-Central states of Benue,
Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi, Kwara and Plateau states to create
a Senate that will genuinely unite the nation,” he said.
According to him, “while the final decision rests with the
party and its caucus, we advise that the APC settles for the
Senate Minority Leader and a former Governor of Benue
State, Senator George Akume for this position on the basis
of the goodwill he enjoys across the country.”
