A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) in Cross River State, Mr Patrick Okomiso,
has called on the electorate to vote for the All
Progressives Congress (PDP) in the governorship
election on Saturday.
According to Okomiso, Cross River indigenes
should vote the APC that has won the election at
the federal level as Governor Liyel Imoke had
canvassed that the state would not be in an
opposition party.
Okomiso emphasised that since the governor had
been propagating the campaign of the state not
to be in an opposition party while campaigning
for the PDP governorship candidate, Prof Ben
Ayade, said the supporters of the governor and
the PDP candidate in the election should vote
APC for the party not to be in opposition.
Okomiso, who contested for the governorship of
the state in 2012 on the platform of the All
Nigeria Peoples Party before returning to the
PDP, emphasised that this point must not be
lost on the state.
His words: “General Muhammadu Buhari has
won and Cross River State cannot afford to be in
opposition. It would be a difficult thing. So let
Cross River State vote enmasse for APC
governorship candidate so all of us can be in the
mainstream. Moreover, we had a governor who
told us that we cannot afford to be in
opposition. I remember when we were in Ogoja,
when he presented Ben Ayade, he said Cross
River cannot afford to be in opposition, which
means he knew what the state was up to if we
were in opposition. So it is better we take the
governor’s advice, which he advised at that time
for us to vote for APC and let all of us return to
APC.
“After all Cross River State was an ANPP state.
It had never been PDP. Not until Donald Duke
came in and brought in PDP. So let us return to
ANPP. ANPP today is APC. So ANPP is our
route. So let the whole state return and see how
we can deal with our problems.
“It would be unfortunate for us to be in
opposition, because the way the state is now, it
is dead and if it dies a second death, it would be
permanent. The first death is that there is
nothing working in the state. Let us call a spade
a spade. Look at the civil servants in the state.
They all wear hungry faces. We are a tourism
state but we are not attracting enough traffic
here. The state is dying. Let the state be
revived. Children can have free education. They
can have free uniform and be served meals in
school. It is possible with somebody with ideas.
“This is one of the reasons I call on General
Buhari to fight corruption to the highest level. Let
all the monies stolen be returned. We don’t need
to build prison yards. You can be imprisoned in
your house. You are only free to come out when
you refund all the monies that you have stolen.
The monies are not in heaven. They are here on
earth.
“The state has a serious problem and that
problem is that we need to eradicate poverty
from the state. The poverty level in the state is
too high. Look at the roads. You cannot even
travel from Calabar to Ogoja.
“Can one really show the mark of the PDP in
Cross River State. Is it because one went to the
House of Reps or Senate and buys a new car,
builds a new house, travels abroad, does that
that translate to the fact that the state is
prosperous? They are more house girls and
house boys from Cross River than in any other
state of the federation. Nothing is working.
“So let Cross River State come out enmasse and
support APC and we can see what progress is
brought to the state. We were sleeping till our oil
wells were taken away. We had a presidential
campaign and people were saying CARRY GO
meanwhile we do not have roads in the state
and nobody even said we needed anything.”
