I must admit that I'm always careful with dogs, apparently due to my experience during my younger days, when the dog of a rich man in my neighbourhood attacked a friend of mine. That incident somehow made me to be scared of dogs. Nevertheless, I've always admired beautiful dogs. So, due to the fact that I was moving to a relatively secluded area, I bought an alsatian puppy primarily for security reasons. Getting the puppy afforded me the opportunity of understanding a dog, and with the help of this section, I learnt some important tips on how to raise a dog. My dog, now a year and 5 months, is agile, barks very well, especially at strangers and could obey simple commands like "sit, go back" and so on. However, I was so baffled on the day armed robbers visited my estate and my able dog refused to even bark at all. My neighbour's house was robbed for very an hour and neither his dog nor mine barked. These are dogs that are always barking all through the night. The robbery really shook my wife and she's very much afraid. I'm thinking of buying another dog, in addition to some other range of measures, to boost security at my place. Yet, it keeps agitating my mind why all the dogs in my area went cold while the robbery lasted That's why I'm wondering, how protective could dogs be?

I would also appreciate any recommendation on a very agile, protective dog which is totally opposed to strangers. I'm based in Abuja. Thanks

1. Did you train the dog to be a guard dog or a pet?

2. While they robbed, did they shoot in the air? If they did, how did you train your dog to react to loud noises?

3. Was your dog locked up during the robbery?

Frankly, I trained the dog on my own. Though I tried, you will understand the limitations in the training I gave him, being a novice. That's why I'm planning to get another dog to complement Arnold. I wouldn't mind giving the second dog a formal, specialised training, so far such is available here in abuja based on recommendation from this great forum. Thanks

Frankly, I trained the dog on my own. Though I tried, you will understand the limitations in the training I could offer, being a novice. I didn't even train him on anything about noise, neither did I train him to be a guard. The little training I could offer centered on commands. That's why I'm planning to get another dog to complement Arnold. My dog is always set loose at night and when no one is in the house.
Thanks

Of you did not train the dog on loud noises, he/she will be scared of loud noises.

Another thing is self esteem which is needed enough to attack. If a dog lacks that, he/she will not attack but stay at a distance and make noise

You can also get books to teach you in guard dogs.

Thanks for your contribution. I travel a lot nowadays and may not have the time to train a dog to be a guard. My wife has always been a fan of dogs. She can handle them, but I would prefer a formal training for the dog I will buy. Any suggestions?

I have none really. I train mine myself to be both pets and guards.

I don't know how I do it though, I just go with the flow and it ends up alright

There are several reasons why dogs wont bark at robbers, 1) it could be d dogs are scared of loud noise, so when they hear suc noise they cower away 2) the robbers might have come prepared by bringing meat, dogs are crazy about meat and once u give them that meat, at that moment, u are their best friends, this is d reason y u have to train your dogs not to eat anitin from anyone or d floor except in a plate or u fed them. If it was meat that was used, u should be tankfull because most times robbers attack a house wit vicious dogs, dey poison d meat, i lost a dog to that recently. At 5 month ur dog is still a puppy and so therefore has time to grow and get more aggresive or u could employ a trainer, i dont know of any in abuja, as i stay in lagos, if not i would have recomended. Instead of getting a new dog, i would advice getting a trainer, for a first time owner, it may not be that easy to handle 2 dogs

Thanks for your comments. My dog is a year and five months, not 5 months. Besides, he doesn't eat anything out of his plates. I'm very sure of that. Is it still advisable to get a trainer, given his age?
Thanks once again

Dogs are security alarm systems in banks and some homes...They don't take action unless triggered. You need to let your dog know the reason you are keeping him, either as a pet or a guard, some dogs serve both purposes depending on the expertise of the owner...

ill just add my 2cents, like i always do.

personally, ill say my dog is not my security. of course they scare people off the house when they bark but for a thief carrying gun? ill beg him to allow me lock my dog first. because believe me, the dog will save you at the cost of its life. and what happens if your dog gets a bullet on the head and the thief still robbs?

if youve had experience with human security you'll know that they dont dare thieves. some will even run away and never come back. even police men carrying gun still use their siren to scare away thieves.

pls dont jeopardize the life of your dear dog. yes, we know they are willing to die for us. but are we willing to let them go?

my 2cent.

I'm glad you dropped some words. I wasn't expecting the dog to fight for me, but I expected it to alert me by barking when the intruders got close the house, so I can take action byalerting the police or something. Of course the dog can't secure me. What baffled me, like I said, is the fact that the dog was mute al through the encounter.

If it's just for alert, you don't need a strong dog. Get your dog familiar with loud noise. Take her out everyday and love your dog.

well...it is but that would take quite sometime and training, this is because boerboels are very domineering and your GSD would really not want to bow down to a new comer, especially if they are both males...

my boerboel(female) and german sherperd(male) play along because they grew up together and Meredith Grey(the boerboel) has taken the leadership role
