Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel is being reportedly being targeted for a shock transfer by Real Madrid.

The Nigerian international has been at Stamford Bridge since 2006, but has been linked with a summer move away after making just 12 Premier League appearances this season.

And according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in bringing the 28-year-old – who has two years left on his contract – to the Bernabéu.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti worked with Mikel during his two-year reign at Chelsea, and is said to be keen on setting up a reunion this summer.

Just wondering who he would or could 'bench' in the madrid first team if the deal is eventually struck. Is it khedira, illara, lucas silva, modric or kroos? I frankly can't see him breaking into the first team. Even if God answers the effectual-fervent-prayer of mikel and khedira gets injured, illara is apparently the fave to replace him not Mikel.
Besides, madrid has a knack for pacy counter-attacks which needs nippy and nifty midfielders who can 'throw' quick and well-measured passes to their always-on-the-run wingers. Mikel's sluggish pattern of play just doesn't suit that.

It would seem another 'long bench' that stretches from 'otuoke' to the palace of the oba of lagos awaits him.

Khedira and illara are leaving this summer, so it'll be him, kroos and silva fighting for the dm spot. Besides he can play alongside modric and kroos. So not as far fetched as you think.

Mikel is 28yrs old and he does not need to convince anyone again about his potential,so go to lesser club to have a playing time is out of it.If I may ask you is Song get enough playing time at west ham.Football as a career is about gambling,sometime it pay and sometime it is not.If Madrid really want him,he should jump at it and prove a point because such opportunity rarely come and it can

Madrid might turn him into the attacking midfielder we know he can be. Go and watch Nigeria-Spain in the last Confederations Cup. He ran the show in midfield and made the Spanish players look ordinary.

If REAL MADRID (The Galacticos) is interested in a player, then that player SURELY has something VERY GOOD to offer.

It is every footballer's dream to play for 'The Galacticos' except of course you re from 'Catalunia'.

That said, 'WE' both know Mikel Obi is a good player and you know why, he's one player that carries out every coach's instructions to the latter on the field of play.

And remember, he's survived every Chelsea manager that has been at the helm of affairs at Stamford Bridge at one time or another. Such players are every coach's delight. Yet another reason why I'm not surprised in Ancellotti's interest of the player.

Finally, let's afford him the credit (HE) Mikel deserves. Come to think of it, he would have been the first Nigerian player to don that jersey if the rumours materialise into reality.....
