Rivers LG Poll: Court Adjourns Voter Register’s Suit Indefinitely by HzRF(m): 6:29am On May 01, 2015
A Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, has adjourned till further notice a suit seeking to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from releasing Voters’ Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission and the Rivers State Government for the conduct of the local government election in the state.

RISIEC had announced that local government elections would be conducted on May 23, 2015, a decalration that did not go down well with the People Democratic Party in the state.

The state PDP had gone to the Federal High Court to prevent INEC from handing over the voters register to RISIEC or the state government.

But the presiding Judge, Justice Lambo Akanbi, after listening to counsel for the state government, RISIEC and PDP on Wednesday, adjourned the matter indefinitely.

Counsel for RISIEC and Rivers State Government, Mr. Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), told the court that he had filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to handle the matter.

Nwofor added that they went to the Appeal Court because the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction over matters concerning local government election.

However, counsel for the state PDP, Mr. E.C. Aguma, explained that they were in court to restrain INEC from handing over the voters register to RSIEC or Rivers State Government for the council elections.

Aguma stated that the position of the court meant that INEC would not give the voters register to any of the parties pending the determination of the matter in court.
