APC chieftain wants individuals to empower women, youths

A MEMBER-ELECT of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya, has called on the in-coming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to slash up to 50 per cent the expenses of the Presidency and National Assembly, all with the intention of having enough resources to cater for the nation’s capital expenditure.

In a media chat at his residence in Kano yesterday, Gaya, who was elected from Gaya/Ajing/Albasu Federal Constituency, urged all his colleagues and the in-coming President to come to term with his opinion.

Until his election as member House of Representatives, Gaya was the erstwhile Commissioner for Finance in Kano State. He said: “In my opinion, I think it will be better for all the elected representatives, beginning from Mr. President to members of Parliament, ministers, other advisors and special assistants to agree that what we will be receiving is slashed to 50 per cent.”

“Since we believe the country needs positive change, we should therefore accept it as such. The slash in the expenses should continue till when our dear nation gets better to execute capital projects, may be from the time we are inaugurated to another two years.”

In another development, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Baba Sharu Dala, has called on individuals to be more dedicated to youths and women’s empowerment programmes, with a view to further strengthening democratic consolidation in the society.

Dala, who made the call at his empowerment project office along Northwest University Road in Kano during an empowerment development scheme he initiated for the underprivileged youths and women in his local council, said: “People should understand that government’s effort should be complemented by putting in some resources in the area of women and youths’ empowerment.

It is by so doing that the issue of unemployment can be addressed drastically. “Our platform, Baba Sharu Vanguard Empowerment Scheme, found it extremely important to help our youths reposition their life through self-reliance.”

Dala, who was a two-time Sole Administrator of Kabo and Ungogo local councils in the state, said that when individual members of the society realised the importance of making people self-reliant, it was the economy of the state that would be at the best advantage position.

He, therefore, urged people to always appreciate what is offered to them by the state, saying: “It is not a hidden fact anymore that one of the most beneficial efforts by any government is to make her citizens self-reliant. This scheme is aimed at adding value to what our government is doing.”

Pay cut is a good idea. We also want them to make sure that whatever is cut from the pay is not stolen or wasted.

Good move... Anyways, just like the first commentor, I hope they don't have other plans to siphon this money back into their already full pockets. It's high time Nigerians enjoy the dividends of DEMOCRACY.

Would anything go wrong with your life if you commend good deeds?? What manner of bitterness is this??

@post: very commendable gesture. I suggest fool-proof measures be put in place to ensure such cuts, if they ever come to fruition, are not redirected into their pockets in the guise of frivolous expenses and allowances because most of those guys are simply there for the money.

Hopefully others will reason along with him. Once their salaries are unattractive i am so sure the bad eggs will look for somewhere else to quench their taste and not Nigeria Politics.

If only you knew the value of the 50% cut, I'm sure you won't say this. I don't know the actual figure but I know it will run into billions of naira.

I just hope this reduction is not hypocritical because most of them are just there for money and they know how to manipulate the system to get more money. I hope Buhari's anti-corruption drive will reduce their excesses to the bearest minimum.

If one person (lawmaker ) is earning # 200000000 a year tell me how many youth that figure can help they are not even starting a company with it for it to reflect on the economy. We are not feeling the impact of having lawmakers as it is. The last Jonathan government did as it pleases so what are we saying !

We still don't have a
