Nobel laureate and political activist Wole Soyinka has put himself forward as one of three candidates for the position of Oxford professor of poetry, a 300-year-old elected post which is seen as the top academic poetry role in the UK.

First held by Joseph Trapp in 1708, the professorship, second only in prestige to that of poet laureate, has been filled in the past by Matthew Arnold, Cecil Day-Lewis, WH Auden, Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon.

Oxford graduates are due to vote on their choice of the next holder of the highly coveted role next month.

Candidates need to be nominated by at least 50 Oxford graduates. Soyinka, who writes drama, novels and poetry, and who was imprisoned in solitary confinement in Nigeria during the 1967-1970 civil war, his poems smuggled out on toilet paper, received more than 90 nominations, including votes from writers Melvyn Bragg and Robert Macfarlane.

So far, the second most nominated candidate was backed by 54 Oxford graduates.

Let's hope the professor Soyinka nabs this post, which I am sure will make him the first African and probably the first non-white person to occupy the role.

Wole Soyinka deserves it

He is undoubtedly the greatest literature export from Africa.

A Professorship in the revered poetry department at Oxford University will be a befitting acknowledgement of his unrivaled skill as a Black writer.

His books and 'work' as you term it are not meant for the consumption of the unlettered hence why you probably do not appreciate them

W. Soyinka is a living legend, an enigma that commands respect wherever he goes.

Make sure your children read his books so that they don't end up like you. Education is key sir

Soyinka's books are written in the English language, you have to learn it properly before you can critique his literary skills.

I am igbo, and am proud of prof soyinka's literary strides. Kudos to him. For us who belongs to be brotherhood of the pen, we celebrate our own irrespective of tribe or race.
