What’s in a name? If you are an African, you will not ask. Even in the West, names have serious implications for the bearer. If you’re Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, the little princess who was named in recognition of British royalty, including the People’s Princess, her late grandmother, Diana and great grandmother, you would not brook a bastardisation of the valued essence of your name.
Honoured on Monday with the triple-barrelled name, the British baby-of-the moment got the rude shock of her short life when a Japanese zoo – Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Gardens, in Oita Prefecture – named its first monkey born this year Charlotte.
According to the zoo, it’s in honour of the newest arrival in Britain’s royal family! Born the day after the Princess of Cambridge, the macaque was found by zoo staff clinging to its mother and visitors invited to vote for the name for the infant monkey chorused Charlotte. By tradition, the zoo asks visitors to name the first new arrival of the year.


The birth of second child to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has attracted a great deal of media coverage across the globe, including Japan. Charlotte came out ahead of Elsa, a character in the popular Disney film “Frozen”.
Soon after the “naming ceremony”, the zoo received a “barrage” of phone calls and e-mail complaints from members of the public, demanding that the name be changed.
The callers urged the zoo to consider the reaction of the Japanese public if a British zoo named a monkey after a member of the Japanese imperial family. The zoo apparently bowed to the pressure and is discussing an alternative name for the monkey.
Such sacrilege pissed the British establishment who named the infant to pay homage to the princess’ great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth and now deceased grandmother, Princess Diana. The princess is the fifth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth and the fourth in line to the throne, behind her grandfather, Prince Charles; her father and her 1-year-old brother, Prince George.
