Really inspiring. But what's an MIT grad doing with 5 children bikonu? Some naija parents no dey try at all, with all that education u still went on to have five kids? When hardship befalls u, u blame people from ur village. Yet poor choices we make choke us down the line. Pretty likely if afam and his fam didn't come stateside he'd just be another unemployed or underemployed graduate atrophying all that intelligence and energy in that wasteland called Nigeria. Just hope it turned out nearly as well for his other four siblings.
One, Nigeria is not a wasteland
Two, I want to have eleven kids, what do you have to say about that?

Our lecturers wouldn't even care to know u personally or know ur capabilities in different areas, more or less advising u on the field to take. Yl some can only know u personally once u dazzle cash on them.

No single motivation can come from them, they rather not award u ur full marks and pull u down. God save us

At Medical School, a late bloomer

Afam Nduaguba, a Nigerian immigrant, worked hard for both family and future; eventually, things clicked

http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2015/05/at-medical-school-a-late-bloomer/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hu-facebook-general

Pix: “I spent five years at Roxbury Community College. It should be a two-year program,” said Afam Nduaguba, pictured here with Chiso Okafor, Nduaguba's mentor and the interim dean of professional studies and career services at RCC. Nduaguba eventually earned a bachelor's from UMass Boston before applying, and being accepted, to Harvard Medical School.

Reminds me of what I personally went through, before I eventually graduated from OAU, Ife.
A brilliant student with 4 distinctions and 4 credits at O Levela (at one sitting), I got admission into the university during the most difficult times of my life. Dad had died 4 years earlier, no parental or family support. I had to rely on daddy's pools agency business to keep body and soul together. That was in the early 90s during the Babangida SAP years. Things were so tight that my focus changed from academic excellence at school to how to survive each day. I was going to school with empty stomach and with virtually just 2 pairs of trousers and slippers. I was missing classes and practicals. I had to change courses, moving from Microbiology to Accounting, even though I had never studied Accounting or Commerce in secondary school. I went through the hard times and graduated eventually with a 2:2.
I came to Lagos and spent almost 3 years doing nothing, enduring the insults and embarrassments of family members and neigbhours.
But Good is faithful. Someone introduced me to a church that changed my focus and reinforced my belief that God is always there for us. The pastor always says ''everything big starts little''. That made me stay stronger. Thank God for the teachings of Prophet TB Joshua and the life changing testimonies at the Synagogue Church of All Nations. Today, I give God the glory for who and what I am!

Onye-ocha is brilliant. Back in Good Shepherd, competing with him drove me to higher academic performance. I am very lucky and grateful to have had this opportunity. I know that so many back in Naija would do similarly well (if not better) with the opportunities I have been given.

dnwabz, who you be?
