Xiaomi 5000mAh Mi Power Bank Unboxing and Review: Much
Thinner, Very compact, Charges Faster.

Xiaomi’s Mi Power Bank is the best choice when we are choosing a power bank to provide our devices some juice. However, the older 10400mAh and 5200mAh units can be quite thick and this is quite inconvenient for frequent travellers. To address this, Xiaomi has introduced a 5000mAh Mi Power Bank and it is much, much thinner than its predecessors, at 9.9mm thick. The 16000mAh and 10400mAh power banks are 350g and 250g, respectively. Both of them use the 18650 battery cell. The 5000mAh power bank uses a polymer battery cell, is only 9.9mm thick, and only weighs 156g. You can easily carry it around in your shirt pocket.

What’s in the box
The box containing the 5000mAh Power Bank already shows how thin the power bank is. As usual, it comes with the power bank, a micro-USB cable and a manual. While the flat-type cable is really short and you might need a longer one sometimes, at least it will not get tangled easily.

The outside
One of the selling points of the power bank is its thickness, which comes at only 9.9mm. While it is quite thin, the construction is solid and I have no worry that the durability is compromised to make it thinner. The battery is made by ATL, the same company that makes iphone batteries. The thin chassis makes it
easier to fit both my phone and the Mi Power Bank in the same pocket. The aluminium case looks simple and nice. The metal case feels really good in hand too. While it is thinner, it is taller and wider and it weighs 1 gram heavier.

On the top of the power bank you would find a micro USB port and a full-size USB port which are meant for charging your devices and refilling the juice back in the power bank. There is a button which serves 2 purposes. It can be used to reset the power bank when the charging stops prematurely or to check the remaining power level. The 4 white LEDs beside the button will light up subtly to show the current battery level. Each LED will represent a quarter of the full charge and you can roughly tell how much power is left by looking on the LEDs. Its design is similar to Xiaomi’s other power banks. The power switch
is located on one end of the device’s curved body, along with the 4XLED light and USB charging port. The outer cover is made of an aluminum alloy.

The inside
The Xiaomi Power Bank 5000mAh version’s model number is NDY-02-AM. As for voltage, it has 3.7V. According to Xiaomi, its input is 2.0A, while its output is 2.1A. In other words, it should only take 3.5 hours to fully charge this device with a 5V/2A charger and cable. While the battery capacity is slightly lower compared to the older 5200mAh Mi Power Bank, the power output efficiency has been increased, resulting in a very similar amount of charge found in both versions of Mi Power Banks. Xiaomi gurantees that there should be a minimum of 3300mAh actual output.

Xiaomi claims that the conversion rate is 93% for this power bank. So here’s the calculation: 5000mAh x 3.7V/5V x 93% = 3441mAh minimum output. So what Xiaomi claims on their site are valid. The 5000mAh Mi Power Bank has a USB charging port rated at 2A. The current rating is higher than its predecessor, which is rated at 1.5A, and you can expect faster charging of your devices from it. The 5000mAh Xiaomi Mi Power Bank still uses the ABOV
97F1204SMBN micro-controllers. It also uses the TI(Texas Instruments) BQ24195 which enables the power bank to charge at 2A. These two chips are what made Xiaomi power banks the best, because they ensure accurate power input and output all the time protecting the power bank and your phone. The battery cell used comes from ATL and has 18.1Wh. Its model number is H994406L.

It still supports bypass charging, which means that the power bank can charge other devices while being charged simultaneously. This is useful when you have limited power sockets.

Mi Power Bank is really cheap, but that does not mean that the safety precaution designs have been compromised. It uses a solution made by the
famous Texas Instruments. It has 9 layers of circuit chip protection and you should stay assured that your devices will not be damaged. The same could not be said if you are buying a FAKE unit, so please be very careful when you are buying power banks and charging accessories.

Buying from a credible God fearing source like MelonTech would be a smart choice.

Should you buy it?
With the price of N3,700 per unit, it is a power bank that I would recommend if you are searching for one. The price is the same with the older 5200mAh Mi Power Bank (after the price rise due to the drop of Naira) and I do not know what more can I ask for. However, if you already have the old model, there is no need for you to buy this newer model unless you feel that yours are too bulky.

Verdict
At first glance the obvious improvement in the 5000mAh Power Bank over its predecessor is the huge reduction in the thickness. While it looks much better aesthetically, it really helps to make it more portable. The charging speed of the output port has been increased too. I am really glad that nothing has been compromised to make the power bank thinner. The power bank still has a respectable actual output and it is as safe as ever, since Li-ion polymer batteries doesn't heat up, unlike 18650 batteries. If you are buying a power bank, please consider this seriously.

Recognize original without opening it:
The original;
1) doesn't charge itself.
2) doesn't have pure white LED lights (the lights are orange color, kind of).
3) doesn't need the switch to be pressed before it starts charging, once you plug it charging begins.
4) the aluminium case is smooth.
5) supports pass through charging.
